Longhorsley Local History Society
The Good Sharps
What connects Whitton Pele Tower, Sharp’s Folly, the fight against slavery, a famous 18th century portraitist and musical parties on the Thames? The answer is a family with strong local connections to Hartburn, Bamburgh and Rothbury, but whose influence extended to Durham and London in the second half of the 18th century.
The story of this family has been told in a recent book by Hester Grant which explains why they were know as ‘the Good Sharps’ and how they became so influential in their day. Recently, the work of one brother has been featured in TV programmes on social welfare at Bamburgh Castle, and the work of another is topical because of current interest in the impact of slavery on British society. Without the records kept by sister Elizabeth we would know much less about them, and other brothers were pioneers in medicine, canal development and engineering.
An illustrated talk on the family will be given by Martin Light, FHA, in Longhorsley Village Hall on Tuesday 12th March at 7.30pm.
Admission is free, and tea and coffee will be provided from 7pm.
