Thought for the Month

September is a time to begin again or of new beginnings. Many of you might have children starting School for the first time, some children might be transitioning to a Middle or High School, there are others who might be embarking on the adventure of University.

My nephew Zach, having turned 18 in June, is now fleeing the nest to pursue his dream of becoming a Chemical Engineer. He is looking towards his future and what that might bring, but life comes with its challenges, its ups and downs, its joys and sorrows. How life goes by so quickly, I remember the day Zach was born and he’s now an adult - it’s scary stuff! Jesus in the Gospel of John, chapter 10 verse 10, says “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full”, a reminder that we are called to live our life, to dream big. If we put our mind to it, we can achieve what we want to, but it comes with hard work and determination.

Recently in our diocese, we were shocked by the death of Father Dermott Donnelly at the age of 55. Father Dermott spent his priestly ministry engaging with Young People, telling them how much God loved them and also to live lives of significance, to make a difference in the world around them.

Children, when they are little, have all kinds of dreams and ambitions, some want to be doctors, nurses or astronauts. Some want to be teachers, musicians or someone famous. Some might fulfil that ambition, but some might go on to be something else. But whatever their dream, may it be one of significance, where one day they will make a difference in someone’s life.

Remember too, it is not too late to begin again. All of us are able to live lives to the full, to make a difference in the world, to be people of significance. We might think, what can we offer in life, but it is the small things that we do that make a difference; never underestimate the impact you might have on the life of someone, never write yourself off. May this September be one of real growth and change, may it be a September of significance.
