Lambing Season
Every year in the spring, farmers seek Veterinary medicine students to help them with lambing sheeps. This is a third-year course that I had not taken yet, but when another vet student asked if I would like to go lambing sheeps in England, I immediately said YES and bought the bundle lambing and was on my way to lambing sheeps in England.
The Route To Lambing In Middle England
The farm was in Redditch close to the birthplace of Shakespeare Staton-Upon-Avon and Birmingham. I got there by traveling to London with Eurolines from Utrecht and taking the bus there to Birmingham (again Eurolines). In Birmingham I took the local bus to Redditch and from there the farm picked me up to the farm.
Night Shifts
When I arrived the farmer turned out not to have slept for nights, because the sheep were lambing. He casually announced that I was going to have to hold the fort tonight and the farmer was going to sleep. He said not to wake him up. I went through the bundle once more and started the evening in good spirit.
The First Birth
The first sheep to lamb the young was turned in the womb. I called the farmer and angry that he was. He really didn’t want to be waken up at night. From then on, I learned very fast to lamb the sheeps and didn’t wake the farmer anymore at night. I had the night shift for 40 days and saw about 250 lambs being born.
Night Rhythm
A beautiful spectacle at night, those sheeps and lambs, but disastrous for my day and night rhythm. A beautiful experience, I would do it again. I just don’t know if I remember the details of lambing sheeps.
