Artist Statement

I am grateful for my education which has granted me a thorough understanding of the technical and the traditional in reference to color, composition, design and needle arts. Despite this acquired knowledge, above all, I rely most heavily on my eyes. I believe visual decisions is of up most importance as an artist.

I am drawn to naive images popular in contemporary folk art. Primitive immediacy. Simplicity. Less is more. It is ok to not know the outcome. Trust your gut. Labor can destroy. Perfection is a learned, flawed concept that often results in stale, stiff work or an academic excuse for art. Technique should not be overrated. Knowledge of art can be found in a book.

One must use their heart as well as their mind. Create truthfully. Work intuitively with expression. Be fresh and spontaneous. I have realness and so does my art. Creating takes energy and emotion. It takes patience and time. There is not race or competition. Each artist stands alone. Art is about the self. Embrace the most creative thing an artist needs by relishing necessary calm, disciplined, solitary play.
