The COU Policy

Policy Mission Statements:

1. Church of Uganda is committed to safeguard, care and nurture the children within our church community

2. Church of Uganda shall carefully select and train ordained and lay ministers; volunteers and paid workers with children and young people: using referees and checking the backgrounds of each person.

3. Church of Uganda shall respond without delay to every complaint made of a child or young person harmed, for whom we are responsible.

4. Church of Uganda shall fully cooperate with statutory agencies during any investigation concerning a member of the church community.

5. Church of Uganda shall seek to offer informed pastoral care to any child, young person or worker who has suffered abuse.

6. Church of Uganda shall care for and supervise any members of our church community known to have offended against a child.

The Policy Objectives are:

1. To safeguard, care and nurture the children within our church community.

2. To respond without delay to every complaint made of a child or young person that has suffered abuse.

3. To cooperate with the statutory agencies during investigations of alleged child abuse.

4. To offer informed pastoral care to any child, young person or worker who shall suffer any kind of abuse.

5. To care for and offer counsel to church members where children under their care have suffered abuse.

6. To train and empower church leaders in Child protection.

7. To expeditiously refer cases of child abuse to relevant organs for onward handling.

Church of Uganda Pledge to Children

“Keep all relationships with children and young people open, observable, readily understood and shared with more than one responsibleadult.

All work with children and young people shall be well supervised and the people doing it shall be carefully selected, trained and guided on their child protection duties.”
