OTHER WHEEL ARRANGEMENTS

FOLLOWING ARE WHEEL ARRANGEMENTS THAT WERE SELDOM USED ON CAMELBACK LOCOMOTIVES.

2-8-2 TYPE MIKADO


Lehigh Valley N-1 Class 257 was built by Schenectady in 1907 and scrapped in 1928. Sayre, Pa. 1918.

47 Camelback N-1 2-8-2s were built in 1903, 1906 and 1907. The last was scrapped in 1932

2-10-0 TYPE DECAPOD

Erie J-1 Class 2503 was built by Baldwin in 1891 and scrapped in 1926, Port Jervis, NY May 1905.

Six engines were built.

0-8-8-0 TYPE MALLET ARTICULATED COMPOUND

Erie L-1 Class 2601 was built by Schenectady in 1907 and scrapped in 1930. Port Jervis, NY June 1911.

Three engines built - rebuilt with a single rear cab in 1921.

L-1 2602 was also rebuilt with an end cab in 1921 and scrapped in 1930. Port Jervis, NY July 1915.

4-2-2 TYPE BICYCLE

Reading R1-b Class 378 was built by Baldwin in 1896 and rebuilt as a 4-4-0 in 1904.

Two were built. Reading Terminal, Philadelphia, 1896.

Reading R1-b 317 was Number 378.

2-6-2 TYPE PRAIRIE

Lehigh Valley I-1 Class 791 was built by Baldwin in 1902.

4-6-2 TYPE PACIFIC

Lehigh Valley K-1 Class 2001 was built by Baldwin in 1905 and scrapped in 1923.

Eight were built - three rebuilt with end cabs in 1919 and 1921.

Lehigh Valley K-2 Class 2234 was built by Baldwin in 1902 as a 2-6-2 and rebuilt in 1906.

Rebuilt as a K-3 with an end cab in 1920 and scrapped in 1951.

Ten rebuilt 2-6-2s were in the class - seven rebuilt with end cabs.

UNUSUAL RAILROADS - Camelbacks were usually used by railroads close to a plentiful supply of cheap culm but railroads in many other areas tried the camelback to reduce fuel expenses. Some examples follow.

MAINE CENTRAL 183 was built by Brooks in 1904 and was rebuilt with an end cab in 1921.

MISSOUR, KANSAS & TEXAS (KATY)

P Class 251 was built by Baldwin in 1895 and was rebuilt with an end cab in 1909.


UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD


WESTERN MARYLAND D-7 50 WAS BUILT BY BALDWIN IN 1884 AND SCRAPPED 1925.

444 was built by Wilkes Barre in 1886.

SHORTLINES - Several shortline railroads interchanging with the anthracite roads used camelbacks, usually aged locomotives purchased from their connections. Examples follow.

BATH & HAMMONDSPORT

860 was an Erie G-8 built in 1891 and scrapped in 1939. Hammondsport, NY 1936.

39 was from the Reading. Hockendauqua, Pa, June 20, 1948.

40 was from the Reading. Ironton, Pa. September 25, 1948.

121 was a Lehigh & New England E-6 2-8-0. Tamaqua, Pa. Colliery No.24.

MIDDLETOWN & UNIONVILLE

Purchased in 1922 from the Lehigh & Hudson River. Built 1907; retired around 1934.

MORRISTOWN & ERIE RAILROAD

993 was a rented Erie G-14 4-6-0 type built by Baldwin in 1887. Morristown, NJ c.1904.

1091 was a rented Erie H-3 2-8-0 built by Grant in 1882. Whippany, NJ 1905.

NORTHAMPTON & BATH

21 may have come from the Central Railroad of New Jersey.
