Training

Training is an important part of preparing for emergency communications response. A wide variety of training is available for emergency communicators. Much of the training is free and available online. Practical training such as participating in nets is also recommended preparation for actual emergency communication service.

Online Training Classes

In-Person Training

  • SKYWARN - SKYWARN volunteers work with the National Weather Service as volunteer severe weather spotters. Training is typically offered in the spring.

  • CERT- Community Emergency Response Team- Harris County Citizen Corps free training 3 hours 1 night per week for 8 weeks.

  • Special Events provide excellent opportunities to practice communication skills and provide public service. Check the Local Clubs section of this site for events they are supporting. Membership in the club is not typically required.

  • Present a training session of a topic you are interested in at the monthly meeting or schedule a date. When you prepare the material you learn more about the topic and everyone one who attends also gains the knowledge.
