Skywarn was developed in the 1960s by the National Weather Service. The program consists of trained weather spotters from all walks of life who provide severe and hazardous weather reports to the National Weather Service. These reports assist meteorologists make decisions that can save lives.

Even with the technology available today, Skywarn spotters provide critical information about local conditions. These reports include information on hazards such as flooding, hail, wind damage and tornados.

Amateur radio operators often serve as trained spotters. Several NEHC ARES members are trained Skywarn spotters. If you are interested in learning more about the Skywarn program please visit https://www.skywarn.org.
