Internet Archive Digital archive to historical books that will include county histories, military records and much more. The best place to start is keyword search of place or subject
Livingston Collection, Genealogical records collection of genealogical notes on many Virginia families from the Virginia Historical Society Papers, 1607-2007 at FamilySearch - index at the beginning
Switchboard Library Search - under Business type libraries - then put the place and it will give you a list of local libraries to that place.
Census, Tax, Petitions
Census may be searched at Ancestry if you have a subscription. FamilySearch has all Federal Census indexed but they do not have all the images (direct links to each census at FamilySearch are on my census page). Mocavo now allows you to search the census for free and does include all images
