In rural areas many farmers had crafts on the side for when there wasn't any money or crops coming in. Farmers inventories often show carpentry tools, tanning tools or shoemaking tools etc.

Childrens in apprenticeships were launched into new family dynamics. They often lived with the master - although masters with many apprentices had more of a bunkhouse kind of lifestyle for them.
