Newspapers

Important elements in Newspaper Searching:

PLACE

Know your place. Print a map that shows the closest towns so that you recognize a paper that might have covered your family.

TIMES

Know your time period. When did this family come to this place? Be generous with search dates - families often appeared in the local paper after they left through letters and reported news.

NAMES

Know your spelling variations. Your family may have spelled Greene with an e. The paper may not have known that. Newspapers used initials, nicknames, Mr. & Mrs. and many other ways of referring to someone

MIX UP SEARCH TERMS

try phrase searching "John Brown" but also try Brown anniversary, Brown marriage, and other combinations. Try other family members. Experiment.
