AWC2O GRADE: 10

In this course students will learn the basic handbuilding techniques (pinch, coil and slab), as well as a variety of decoration methods. Students will also study clay properties, the basic history of ceramics and the elements involved in firing completed pieces.

AWC3M GRADE: 11

In this course students will continue to experiment with handbuilding techniques, a variety of decoration methods, as well as gain experience on the pottery wheel. Projects will be larger and more complex than those completed in grade 10. Students will review clay properties, history of ceramics, and the firing process, as well as gain an understanding of the career options for professional potters.

PREREQUISITE: AVI1O Visual Arts or AVI2O Visual Arts or AWC2O Ceramics or contact your Guidance Counselor for permission to waive the prerequisite.

AWC4M GRADE: 12

In this course students will continue to experiment with handbuilding and throwing techniques, as well as a variety of decoration methods. Projects will be larger and more complex than those completed in grade 11. Students will review clay properties, history of ceramics, and the firing process, as well as gain an understanding of the career options for professional potters.

This technique is called “sgraffito” and is achieved through underglazing and then carving away before firing.
