Energy Saving Day

After watching the educational video about the types of energy (renewable and non renewable), kids were asked to draw many types of energy like thermal energy, eolic energy, electric energy. Also, they exploited some tips on reducing energy and drew ways on that cause. Moreover, the students drew: “Create Less Food Waste”, which had to do with the idea of saving food and avoiding household food waste that could lead to massive pollution.

The second drawing : “Weatherize your home” had to do with insulating our homes with practical ideas, like weatherstripping windows and installing sweeps to the bottom of exterior doors.

The last drawing “Trade in for an electric car” provides the idea that one of the most powerful individual actions people can take against climate change is to change the way we get around. We prefer electric vehicles instead of gas-powered or combustion engine cars.

All the above, gave an opportunity for a much better experience away from a heavy language lesson motivating all students while implementing new knowledge and activating a wide range of learning styles in our class.

Planting the Soil

Creating the application garden

In November 2022, we created our application garden at school. November is the best time for planting in our region. So we followed the cycle of nature as we should.

We joined forces with the Department of Greenery & Environment of the Municipality of Pylaia- Chortiatis for this project, who responded enthusiastically to the idea.

Thanks to the expertise of Mrs Maria Mavroudis, agriculturist in charge and her crew, who collaborated with Mrs Katerina Aza, headteacher, we achieved the best results. After planting, we’ve made a plan for the maintenance and received instructions  that the teachers and  the students must follow during gardening.

The Department also provided the school with  new composting equipment.

Creating an Erasmus corner at school

Journal of mobilities Amsterdam-Estonia

Since the year 2015, the 3rd Primary School of Pylaia has been participating in Erasmus+ educational programs. This year, at the beginning of September, the "Water is Life" program started and the first mobility took place in the Netherlands, specifically in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. It is the country of the renowned Erasmus to whom the program owes its name. The experiences and the impressions from this trip were many and valuable.

First of all, we got in touch with new colleagues from other countries in order to organize the new program. Both the exchange of opinions about the project, as well as informing colleagues about good educational practices used in our schools, worked very constructively.

Our daily meetings helped:

to strengthen the European dimension of teaching and learning by promoting knowledge about the common European heritage and diversity.

promoting the use of new technologies and innovative teaching methods.

support the exchange and transfer of best practices in teaching and the development of our schools.

ensuring that learning mobility is a realistic possibility for every student in school education.

Of course, we will not fail to thank the team of colleagues from the host country for their warm hospitality. We toured the city of

Amsterdam which is known to be one of the most beautiful and funniest cities in the world. We were guided to the fascinating museums (Van Gogh, Rembrandt House Museum, National Rijksmuseum, Royal Palace Amsterdam, etc.).

We loved the architecture of the impressive buildings, while the cruise on the wonderful canals of the city was an unforgettable experience.

Getting to Know Each other

School Presentation (3rd Primary School of Pylaia)

Please briefly present the school and include the following information:

General information (e.g. the covered programmes/levels of education, number of staff and learners in the school)

• What is the school's motivation to join this project?

• Is there any specific experience or expertise that this school and its staff can contribute to the project?

The 3rd Primary School of Pylaia welcomed its first students in 2015 and it is located at a suburban area of Thessaloniki.
There are 282 pupils, aged 7 - 12 years and a headteacher, 2 deputy headteachers, 36 highly experienced and skilled
teachers of various specialties, one school nurse, 3 special education teachers, 2 persons as school supporting staff and 4 maintenance staff. Five students have special educational needs and 1 student is physically challenged.

The core curriculum subjects are Languages (Greek, English, French, German) Mathematics, Science, History, PE, Social & Political Education, Religious Studies, Arts, ICT. The school has  a fully equipped library.
The cultural background of the students is homogeneous but the socioeconomic one is not. The parents' association and
the local, regional and national authorities actively support the goals and activities of the school. The school cooperates
with persons and institutions that complement or support its objectives.

Our school is located in a region full of water bodies worth studying. We would like to raise the awareness of our students about modern environmental issues that affect their everyday life and have global impact. Our teachers engage their students in interdisciplinary innovative activities about the environment. It is time for us to team up and work in an international environment, gain expertise and achieve goals that are impossible to meet locally.

The people in charge of the project is the Headmistress Mrs Aikaterini Aza and a project team of teachers all very experienced, reliable, enthusiastic, with a team work ethos.
Every year environmental programs & cultural activities are part of the curriculum of our school. We have already completed an Erasmus Project which was called "Language Enrichment”. We are currently implementing as partners two Erasmus+ projects about water and one cultural. The first two are titled “Water for Us – We for Water” and “Water is Life”. The cultural one is called “Tour my City”. We have gained knowledge and skills that could be applied to other relevant projects. Most of all, we have raised awareness in the local community and our students are motivated to explore the topic more.

Several other cultural programmes have been implemented enhancing our European ethos: “UN: The Peacemaker of the

Planet” in 2018 with an educational school trip to the UN headquarters (Geneva) and in 2019, a programme about the

European Parliament with an educational school trip to Brussels. In 2020, we collaborate with the Greek School in Naples, Italy.

Ms Aza has also implemented cultural programmes: “The Tale of Two Cities: Thessaloniki – Istanbul” about history, with a school mobility, eTwinning and Erasmus+ projects. She is also a member

of  ”The Citizens’ Movement Towards the Foundation of the Folklore Museum of Pylaia”.
