Nyina Foundation

Website Manager and Co-founder

I volunteer as a website manager for the Nyina Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to provide early disease detection/ diagnosis and offers free annual health screenings to rural unprivileged people in Uganda.

Health & Help

Editorial Coordinator & Online Editor

I was both the editorial coordinator and a online editor for Health & Help. It is an international non-profit organization that builds clinics to provide care for patients of every nationality, faith and sexual orientation. Patients receive the necessary medical treatment regardless of their ability to pay for it. Every person on the Health & Help team understands our mission: we become better people by helping others.

Guatemala Project

The clinic provides healthcare services in the highland region to a population of over 25,000 people. We provide treatment every day without exception, as well as educational lectures, and prophylactic measures to prevent diseases in children and adults.

Nicaragua Project

In a chain of villages located on a mountain ridge away from big cities, we do everything to make sure patients receive treatment in time. We treat and transport patients in emergency circumstances, provide consultation to children and adults, and follow pregnancies and chronic conditions.

Peace Corps

Vanuatu Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WASH) Research Volunteer

Peace Corps

I received an invitation to serve as a WASH Research volunteer for the Peace Corps in Vanuatu. Given the COVID-19 Pandemic, I was unable to serve as a research volunteer.

MODEM Dementia Intervention

http://www.modem-dementia.org.uk/

The University of South Florida & MODEM

In this project, the University of South Florida worked in collaboration to produce summaries of heath interventions for people with dementia and their carers by summarizing evidence-based interventions from systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Other MODEM researchers were: the London School of Economics and Political Science, Universities of Southampton, Newcastle and Sussex, and the International Longevity Centre-UK.

MODEM aims to generate new evidence to inform policy and practice so as to better meet needs, promote the well-being of people with dementia and their carers, and achieve efficiency in the use of resources.

MODEM will develop a comprehensive set of models to estimate current and future needs, outcomes and costs, drawing on methods from a range of disciplines, with the involvement of people with dementia and their carers. An important outcome will be a publicly available legacy model for others to use. Individuals and stakeholders will be able to make their own projections of needs for care and support.

Conversion of Existing Paper-Based Patient Charts into Electronic Medical Records at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana for Hospital Use and Data Analysis

http://www.kathhsp.org/

Ghana Practicum Program, College of Public Health, Georgia Southern University

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH)

Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana

Public Health Professionals from Georgia Southern University implemented the first recorded Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system in Ghana, and Western Africa, to replace the existing paper-based patient chart system that had been utilized in the hospital for over 50 years. Through collaborating with hospital staff and medical students in the implementation and training process of the project, a secure EMR system was established for the hospital to continue the conversion process.

The established EMR system will not only allow hospital staff and physicians to have a more efficient method to access patient records, but will also grant researchers the ability to analyze data both prospectively and retrospectively to examine the distribution of morbidity and mortality in future research endeavors.

Project Amazonas

Madre Selva Research Station, Loreto Region, Peru

Three communities along the Rio Orosa in the Upper Basin of the Peruvian Amazon Basin were incorporated into a 'Plan de Vida' framework to provide territorial recognition of the communities by the Peruvian government. Segments of the framework included a Public Health survey administered to members of the community to assess sanitation and hygiene. Cultural practices and home remedies were also annotated in the findings. Other segments of the framework involved establishing community boundaries and assessing food cultivation practices so that REDD may be implemented to protect the communities and surrounding land from degradation and deforestation.

Health and well‐being:Andrea Roca (Biology) and Adrian Badana (Biology) conducted cross sectional surveys to collect data regarding opinions, attitudes, and perceptions related to health, well‐being, and the perceived relationship between environmental degradation and health and well‐being. They compared the data collected from a similar survey in 2001 by Project Amazonas, Inc., to assess the impact of the health intervention efforts implemented in the region since then.
