In this role, I check the location of existing structure points against aerial imagery to verify that they are in the correct location and confirm that the name and address information are correct using authoritative sources. Establishing a Research Division at a Teaching Hospital: Lessons Learned Along the Way
The American Medical Writers Association 2021 Medical Writing & Communication Conference
Abstract
Creating a research division from scratch requires both molding a person’s skillset and a touch of creativity. We established the first research division, within a hospital’s graduate medical education department. As a research division, we provide research support to over 50 residents and faculty across five specialty programs. Establishing a research division within the hospital first required engagement with residents and faculty. We began by providing presentations to each specialty program, and at grand round hospital meetings, where we introduced our roles and described the types of research support that we provide, from writing research proposals to submitting publications. We then constructed a research project tracking sheet to record any research projects and follow their progression, from inception to publication, as well as to create a list of research projects for Association of Graduate Medical Education continuing accreditation purposes. We also started to hold monthly Academic Research Council meetings, where residents and faculty can present their research project proposals and receive feedback before commencing with their research. We are continuing to improve on our research support systems to further streamline and enhance the process for our residents and faculty members. We will present our path towards establishing a research division within a graduate medical education department, the lessons we learned along the way, and steps we will take moving forward. After reviewing this poster, readers will be able to evaluate the steps taken to form a research support system and construct their own research division from the lessons learned through our process.
