Education

In the area of education, the strategic goal of the Department of Family Medicine is to excel at providing modern, innovative family medicine education.

The Education Strategic Plan focuses on augmenting the objectives, modes of delivery and assessment of learning in family medicine while maintaining and enhancing the continuity of learning for all learners: students, residents, members of the Department of Family Medicine and family physicians in the community who teach.

Currently, the department has five educational programs, four that provide education for medical students or residents and one that assists in improving the quality of FM education.

Undergraduate Program in Family Medicine

This program participates in all four years of undergraduate education. It focuses on delivering family medicine-specific competencies in keeping with the objectives of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. These competencies enhance the development of medical students as “generalists”.

Postgraduate Program in Family Medicine

Residency Program

This primary, two-year program leads to eligibility for certification by the College of Family Physicians of Canada to practice as a family physician.

Enhanced Skills Residency Program

The enhanced skills are additional training that can taken following completion of the family medicine residency program. These are: Care of the Elderly, Sport and Exercise Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine Anesthesia and Palliative Care.

Faculty & Staff Development Program

This program offers opportunities to FM faculty members and community family physicians who teach to improve their skills in various academic and non-clinical domains, such as teaching, scholarship and administration. The program also offers professional development opportunities for staff in the department.

Competency Based Achievement System

ESP assists departmental and community teaching faculty to enhance their skills and knowledge in the supervision of students and residents in the current work-based environment. It also provides feedback to and evaluation of learners.
