I lead the Welsh Rugby Union injury surveillance project and chair its associated steering group.


We have published several studies showing:

  • Concussion increases the risk of subsequent injury (paper)

  • Changes to contact-related injury risk (paper)

  • Subsequent injury profiles (paper)

  • Concussion knowledge at professional and amateur levels

  • International rugby has a high risk of injury (paper)

  • Neck strength in adult and age-grade international rugby players (paper)

United Rugby Championship

I am leading the first multi-continent rugby injury surveillance project for the United Rugby Championship, known as PRISM (Professional Rugby Union Injury Surveillance for a Multi-continent league). Co-investigators are: Dr Molly McCarthy-Ryan

Individualising injury risk and incidence

Dr Leah Bitchell (PhD student completed) is looking at ways to assess individual injury risk in professional male Rugby Union.

The work is funded by the Welsh Rugby union and KESS2.

Concussion return-to-play in Rugby Union

Mr Ben Robson (PhD student) is investigating how to enhance concussion return to play monitoring in professional male Rugby Union.

We are collaborating with the Welsh Rugby Union and the Welsh Professional Regional teams.
