Teaching Experience

Art Span, San Francisco, CA /Teacher 2001-2013

Teaching for local nonprofit (sponsors the Open Studios in San Francisco) in their educational project for diverse and underserved youth, Art for City Youth

o Developed lesson plans and taught hands-on art projects as part of an eight-week residency at SOMA and Mission District elementary schools (2008-11). Classes G3-5 each created models, utilizing 2D and 3D strategies to create the layout and elements for special school-wide displays.

o Developed creative lesson plans and taught hands-on art projects at street festivals and recreation centers for children and youth

o Team-taught an art project for 20 art students at Gateway High School. Project was a self-portrait derived from photos taken of themselves for the class. Product displayed at the Canvas Café, SF.

o Taught Art Projects at Youth Arts Festival for class field trips Pre-K -12 (Zeum, De Young Museum)

o Docent at Youth Arts Festival (Zeum, De Young Museum, Somarts Gallery) led tours of the exhibitions of student works for class field trips Pre-K -12 and adults.

o Created customized workshops at Children’s Fine Arts Program, ages 10-18

o Digital Photography/Handmade personal narrative books: Students were taught basics of camera handling and controls, use of tripods, close-ups, and composition. Photos were then edited and printed for use in their personal book. Basic materials, design, and stitching of books were taught, with emphasis on creative use of supplied materials (which included specialty papers, leather, and found materials).

o Video/Narratives: Divided students into teams including a writer, photographer and producer. All students then had a chance to edit the narrative, a created “news” story, in their own way.
