The Samuel Doak Chapter NSDAR joined the Wreaths Across America Organization to help place wreaths on the graves of veterans in the Hamblen Memorial Gardens in Hamblen County, Tennessee, on December 16, 2017.  Seven DAR Members, Joyce Damon, Tracy Wood, Ann Word, Jane Hersch, Jane Coleman, Barbara Baker and our associate member Sue King-Marschalk, were joined by Terry Shipley, the daughter of our chapter member Sarah Murphy, and spouses, Ross Baker, Ray Damon, and Leroy Coleman.

A program was conducted by the Wreaths Across America observing the contributions of all the branches of the service, and honoring each branch of the service.   At each grave, those placing the wreaths were to take a few minutes and say the name of the veteran and pay respect for what they had done for each of us.   Although the weather was cold, it was sunny and the wreaths were quickly placed at the graves.

Eight members of the Samuel Doak Chapter attended the Tidence Lane Service of Commemoration and Reinternment at First Baptist Church in Whitesburg, Hamblen County, Tennessee, on Oct. 21st, 2017. Upon arrival, everyone was to sign in and was given a Book, describing the event.

Bagpiper Jon Shell lead the wagon drawn by two beautiful black mules which carried the earthly remains of Tidence Lane in the coffin to the new burial place.  The coffin was placed in the cemetery and the program began.  Four ministers, Rev. Charles Brewer, former pastor of First Baptist Church of Whitesburg; Rev. Dr. Randy Davis, President and Executive Director of the Baptist Association, and former minister of First Baptist Church in Morristown, TN; Rev. Richard Long, descendent of Tidence Lane, and minister of Brown Springs Baptist Church in Mosheim, TN; and Rev.  Allen Payne, minister of First Baptist Church of Whitesburg, TN, spoke.  As Regent of Samuel Doak Chapter, I was asked to bring greetings, and Samuel Doak Chapter Chaplin Carol Long offered a beautiful prayer.  Russ Crum, soloist sang “The Wayfaring Stanger”, and “Amazing Grace”.  At the closing, the Sons of the American Revolution from Rogersville, TN, marched out to the bagpipes.  It was a beautiful moving event.

Those attending from Samuel Doak Chapter were Barbara Baker, Ellen Betts, Jane Coleman, Joyce Damon, Jane Hersch, Carol Long, Ina Schmidt, and Deborah Smith.
