Material environment

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Gujarat, India at 8:46 AM on January 26, 2001 killed approximately 20,000 people and devastated a large number of villages and towns over a wide area of western Gujarat. The report that follows is focused on the cultural heritage properties affected. The UNESCO mission was undertaken in order to gain a quick perspective on the impact of the earthquake on heritage properties, and to assess what are the priority needs that outside assistance through UNESCO may be able to provide. The report throws light on the different organisations that are responsible for the conservation of material heritage in Gujarat.
