Community culture planning

There is a growing emphasis within local government on the need to promote 'local distinctiveness', with communities being asked to consider and highlight the things they consider important within their familiar surroundings, and then play an active role in their protection. A Community Culture Plan focuses on community betterment by bringing together the local cultural assets of economy, workforce, heritage and amenity services. The aim is to produce a consensus-based, achievable roadmap to guide the community's path to short and long-term economic growth.

Four key goals developed through a 'community culture planning process' are:

1) Connect Community and Culture

2) Engage Locally

3) Work Collaboratively

4) Build Capacity:

  • to benefit from education, training, jobs and investment

  • to live in safe and clean neighbourhoods

  • to enjoy long and healthy lives

  • to value one another and play an active part in the community.

To make a community culture plan there is a requirement to combine the heritage features of the material and natural environments within one integrated features planning process.
