Military Chaplains at The Cenotaph

This is the full article - an extract was published in paper newsletter.

This year for the first time, six retired Military Chaplains will take part in the March Past at The Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. Having served a substantial part of my ministry as a regular Army Chaplain I am passionate about Remembrance and feel very honoured to have been selected to be among them.

Chaplains are an intrinsic and indispensable element of the Military, both on operation and with Service families. They are fully involved in military training, tasked with the building up of spiritual and moral fibre, and mutual trust and dependability, essential preparation for the theatre of armed conflict- together with, of course, conveying spiritual comfort and fortitude in the often grave consequences of conflict. There have been many distinguished Chaplains who have served our country, among them the Revd Theodore Bayley Hardy V.C., D.S.O., and M.C. who gave his life during the First World War. It is sobering to think that these Chaplains past and present have gone into some of the most dangerous situations to support fellow colleagues based on personal fortitude and faith alone, as they are not permitted to carry arms. It is so befitting therefore that the Chaplains have been invited to take part in the Remembrance Commemoration at the Cenotaph this year.

Remembrance is so poignant to all of us, when we remember with thanksgiving and honour those who have given their lives so that we can now live in peace and freedom. It also calls to mind the many who have survived conflict with the same aim, yet who carry lifelong scars, both physical and mental. As such, Remembrance impresses upon us what really matters and is truly important, not only in the present but, crucially, for our young people in the years that lie ahead.

In this respect, it is so encouraging that Remembrance is fully integrated in our childrens’ education at school, so that the values it upholds are taken on board and will continue to be part of their lives when they have grown up. Colonel John Mc Crae advocated this commitment in the final words of his poem “In Flanders Fields”:

“To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders Fields.”

May we never fail to remember, both reflectively and proactively, and hold high the torch of peace and freedom. The future of all of us depends on it.

MUGA

After lots of hard work by Cllrs Elliott, Boyle and Douglas we can now report that the MUGA floodlights are all working - just in time for the dark, winter nights. Some new Passive Infra-Red lights have also been installed to allow users to see their way out of the facility once the floodlights are turned off. When you are inserting the token the groove MUST be on the left hand side otherwise the token snags.
See photo below.

We have had a conflict of booking dates recently whereby two groups wanted to use the facility at the same time. If you are a group who regularly use the MUGA on specific evenings could you please let the Clerk know on the email above and she will produce a table of users to be placed on the MUGA noticeboard.

Emily Wilding Davison - Village Plaque

Unfortunately, after looking into the issue of registering the plaque as a community asset, we have been informed that this cannot be included on the community value list. Only buildings and land, whose main use has been to further the social well-being of a community, can be included. However, we hope to come to an arrangement with the owners of the building to keep the plaque in place and the parish council will keep the plaque in good condition.

Archie’s Pond

Contractors started work at the end of September and Phase 1, dredging the ponds, has been completed. Work will now be starting on complete refurbishment of the paths and new decking by the main pond.

The site has been cordoned off as it is not safe due to the work, please do not attempt to use it until the work is completed and this will be announced in the Tree.

Northumberland County Council - Reporting Issues via the Website

This section is not in the paper version.

Did you know that lots of issues/problems which residents contact the parish council about can be reported directly to Northumberland County Council via its website on www.northumberland.gov.uk

At the bottom of the home page are a set of icons relating to “Top Tasks” covering: Bin issues; Planning Applications; Pothole problems; Street Light faults; Dog Waste problems; Fly-tipping issues; Empty Grit Bins; Tree & Shrub issues and noise problems.

Every report is given a unique log number reference and will be sent to the relevant department to deal with the issue. Reporting problems directly to NCC will save time and resolve problems sooner.

Your County Councillor

I am hoping that we can crack on with the two simple hardcore passing places on the Smallburn Road now that locations have been agreed. There is a bit of a potential issue around the possible need for traffic lights etc which all adds to the cost but we should get these done in the next few months I am promised.

As always please get in touch if I can help with anything -

Reporting Potholes and Damage to Roads and Pavements

You can report problems with pavements and adopted roads online.

Go to 'Top Tasks' on NCC's homepage northumberland.gov.uk

Damage that is considered a serious risk will be repaired within 24 hours.

Other damage will be repaired within 28 days. NCC rely on reports from the public so don't assume that someone else will report the damage.

NCC are only potentially liable for damage if they have been negligent - they can't be expected to repair damage that they don't know about.
