Your County Councillor

As we know recent weeks in Afghanistan have been desperate for their citizens and especially those trying to flee their country. That is why I have said that the County Council want to, and will do, our bit for their refugees.

At the time of writing we are still awaiting final details from Government as to how many we might be able to take into the County but I’ve been amazed by the kind offers of help that so many have made.

Hopefully we will soon be able to offer some families who have been through this ordeal a new home in Northumberland.

NCC Highways have identified possible locations for passing places on the Smallburn Road and we are working with the Parish Council to see what can be done.

As always please get in touch if I can help with anything -

Glen Sanderson (County Councillor) 07730 979 737 glen.sanderson@northumberland.gov.uk

(Was Breaking News)

Case rates remain, with most of the new cases being of the Delta variant, but the number of patients in hospital and the death rates are very low.

In summary, the government’s Covid Autumn and Winter Plan is to increase vaccination numbers, encourage ventilation, face coverings, testing, hand washing and using the NHS Covid-19 App.
See our Covid Autumn and Winter Plan webpage for more details.

Home Testing Kits will be in the Shoulder of Mutton car park alternate Wednesdays from 3:15pm to 4:30am - October 6th and 20th.

Longhorsley Parish Council

The next Parish Council meeting will be held on 13th October 2021 in the Village Hall, starting at 7pm, with a parishioner slot at 8pm.

Meeting notices are displayed on village notice boards, with minutes and other information found on the Parish Council website

northumberlandparishes.uk/longhorsley

In the event that the meeting has to be moved to a ZOOM meeting, a notice will be placed on our website giving the joining instructions.

Contact details for the current members are detailed below:

Clerk: Gillian Turner - 4 Lowther Close, Seaton Manor, Ashington, NE630HY 01670 812704 or email parishclerk@longhorsley-pc.gov.uk

Chairman: Iain Elliott Iain.elliott@longhorsley-pc.gov.uk

Councillors: Kirsty Bell, Peter Boyle, Norman Douglas, Penny Ford, Andy Hedman and David Pringle.

Allotments

At the time of writing, we have a vacant allotment plot which is available to residents of the parish. The cost of the allotment is £10 per annum plus a share of the water charge. During these unprecedented times, the allotment area is a place where you can go to forget your troubles and grow your own produce. An application form is available through our website or by contacting the Clerk - “Get Digging”!!

Emily Wilding Davison - Village Plaque

There is currently a plaque on the former home of Emily and we are looking into how to register this as a Community Asset. At present, only English Heritage has the entitlement to erect the formal blue plaques and these are normally restricted to the London area. As we believe that this is an important part of our social history, we will take this onboard.

Archie's Pond Project

The first part of the project will be to dredge the existing ponds once the wildlife has left. Smaller overspill pools will be created next to the main ponds too. After the dredging new decking will be installed together with maintenance to the existing footpaths to better accommodate wheelchair and pushchair users.

We have received several donations from local residents totalling £3,500, but if you would like to contribute, please contact the Clerk.

Community Orchard

We will be planting a small community orchard on the corner of the West Road and Smallburn Road this autumn, hopefully NE heritage varieties. There will be eight trees, apple, pear and plum, which we hope will provide a lovely show of blossom in the spring and fruit, which will be available when you are passing, in the autumn.

These will replace the cherry trees which had to be removed.

Changes to Morpeth Train Services

Significant changes were planned for LNER's timetable from May 2022 including reducing the number of trains stopping at Morpeth.
Following a consultation which ran till 5 August those plans have been put on hold.
Cllr Sanderson said: "While we welcome the announcement that any new timetable changes will not be introduced for another year, I am very concerned it is just pushing problems back for another 12 months."

From December, a new Transpennine Express service will run between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
It is planned to operate five times each weekday in each direction, calling (in most cases) at Newcastle, Cramlington, Morpeth, Widdrington, Alnmouth and Berwick. In Scotland it will serve a new station at Reston when it opens in the coming months, Dunbar, and Edinburgh Waverley.

Despite sending out reminders, there are 13,200 properties still to complete and return their Electoral registration forms.
The county council is required by law to visit those properties that needed to respond but didn't - which is a time consuming and costly exercise.
Canvassers acting on behalf of the council will be carrying this out during October and November.
Staff will wear ID badges to identify themselves and will only ask for the details of the people living at the address, not bank details.
