How I Met Arnhem

When I went to live ‘antikraak’ in Arnhem I lived in the first neighborhood outside the center. Now it is part of the center. The ‘antikraak’ building was an old uwv-building and wasn’t that antikraak actually, because everything was new, and I was the first to live in my studio. They were going to transform it to luxurious apartments, but in the mean while they rented part of it as 'antikraak'.

Center Of Arnhem

On one of my walks through the center I saw that there was a Reshare shop. The storefront looked nice and there was a sign asking for a volunteer. I went inside and looked around and started talking to the manager of the shop. She showed me around and asked if I wanted to volunteer 2 half days of the week. I said yes and started almost immediately.

The Reshare Store

It was fun talking to the costumers, going through the cloths, and hanging them and thinking about where the new collection should go. I also did the cash register. After a while the Reshare brand was doing good, and they wanted to open a few new stores. With that they could afford an assistant manager in the Arnhem store or Nijmegen store. I also applied like my other volunteer colleague.

Salvation Army (Leger Des Heils)

The Reshare brand is part of the Salvation Army (Leger des Heils), and I had an interview at their headquarters in Arnhem. The interview went well, but they chose my colleague. I stayed till the end of my volunteer contract with them. As it was a Salvation army brand, I had to be a Christian to get a paid job with them. Being a Catholic by birth isn't enough.

Arnhem Marketing

I loved that the manager took me to a marketing meeting, where Arnhem was branding itself and all the stores in the center. Reshare is a secondhand clothing store, but sometimes they have brand new things in their collection.
