My First Internship
In the first month of the Veterinary Medicine study, I did an internship for a week to learn how animals are treated. I drew a pig farm in IJsselstein (Utrecht). It was when Swine Fever measures were in place. In all stable different work clothes and caps on my boots were in place to prevent spread of the disease. A lot of changing going from stable to stable.
The Piglets
It was also one of the last years when it was allowed to cut the ears and tails of the piglets. I was allowed to do this with the newborn piglets. What a noise piglets can make. Fortunately, this procedure without anesthesia is abolished. This is done to prevent them from hurting each other in the stables.
Pigsty Perfume
That week I went by bus to and from the farm. On the way to there, there were always people sitting next to me, but on the way back I had plenty of space. I had half the bus for myself. This was of course due to the delicious pigsty perfume that sticks to me. Changing cloths, washing, or showering briefly does not help. It was a nice experience fresh from the island of Curaçao to discover the farm life in The Netherlands. I would still work there if it paid better.
