Abstract Art 2014 - Group Show

Terry Duffy
Earlier this year Desmond Tutu invited Terry to show his ‘Victim, no resurrection’ painting in Cape Town, South Africa, to help mark the commemoration and celebrations marking 20 years since the end of Apartheid. Work I have selected for this show includes a major painting which has just arrived back after being exhibited in Venice along with new work created in his London studio which has not previously been shown.
Lisa Cole Kronenburg
American artist but long-time resident of Liverpool Lisa is well known for her large canvasses but for this show she has now created a new collection of original abstract paintings on paper and canvas. Lisa has also created a number of originals painted in oils on paper which are unframed and available for purchase at the Private View.
Daniel John
A selection of studies which are part of an ongoing body of work, exploring a multi layered acrylic painting and drawing technique. Overlaid mark making and drawings are made with automatic and pre-historic drawing processes in mind.
Matthew Bailey
After a sensational 2014 Graduation Show at Liverpool Hope I am delighted to be showing a collection of his original paintings in oils, some featuring string, plus an immersive interactive soundscape in the Black Gallery.
Roland Keogh
Originally from South Africa, Roland is now living in Liverpool and in this show I have selected a collection of his abstract landscapes and works which feature waves of colour and experiments of form and movement.
Lynette Kay
Originally from Merseyside Lynette’s paintings feature bold colours and lines in a varied palette which also features delicate details amongst the strong confident brushstrokes
Paul Bennett
International fine artist who has recently been shown in Singapore and London creates paintings which generate a sense of intimacy and isolation while leaving the subject open to interpretation.
Jefferson Waters
Having moved to Liverpool from London to establish his practice in the ‘North’ Jefferson has been busy creating a diverse body of work but for this show I have selected paintings from his ‘Small Window’ series which feature lusciously applied oils onto board and canvas.
Barbara Ashby
A painting which has hung in the private collection for nearly 20 years this painting still conveys the vibrant colours and dynamism of the time when it was painted in Liverpool when the artist was living in the city.
Andy Brewin
When I first saw this work I was reminded of Gerhard Richter – the paintings are both Intricate and yet chaotic whist the application of paint and the use of marks communicate a sense of place and form yet remain ambiguous.
Felice Beilin
A series of four works which convey a sense of place through the use of colours and abstracted forms distinctly associated with the location.
Simon A Yorke
Dark and brooding the work is rich in colour and finely painted.
The work selected for the Abstract Art Show at the Corke Gallery has been chosen to illustrate a range of abstract art styles and approaches. The artists selected include formally trained and internationally recognised artists as well as self-taught individuals who have developed their own practice through their love of the process of putting paint onto paper and canvas. Abstract art explores the relationships of forms and colours and seeks to break away from traditional representation of physical objects. This show aims to present the visitor with a variety of work which will provide the viewer with a starting point from which they can start their journey of appreciating abstract art.
'Fusion' by M. Valerio

M. Valerio is a fine artist, illustrator and poet who is constantly creating new bodies of work incorporating huge themes including: love & loss, nature & science, the future & the past. The artist creates vibrant, colourful art works in acrylics, oil pastels and water colours. Subjects of the artists work include still life, portraits, landscapes and works from the imagination. Finely detailed, large scale drawings, in pen and ink or pencil, bring together the figurative and abstract, the patterned and chaotic and the polemic and playful.
The Corke Art Gallery show which coincides with the Liverpool Biennial Festival features a series of new collections of work never previously exhibited and this will be M. Valerio’s largest exhibition of original drawings included in a single solo show . M. Valerio’s work can be seen online at www.artedeltutti.com
The show will also included booklets of illustrated rhymes for children entitled 'The Macaldi Moraldi Collection'. “They are rhymes that touch on issues of the day but in quite a playful way for children. They are for thoughtful imaginative young people, from five upwards,” explained M. Valerio.
Editions of many of the booklets have been sold in aid of a number of humanitarian organisations, including:
Amnesty International, The Big Issue, Oxfam and Médecins sans Frontières.

Biennial Opening Weekend 'Pop Up' Show

Inspired by a great night at the opening of John Moores 2014 on Friday 5 July 2014 I went straight back to the Corke Gallery and put together a 'view from the window' pop up show featuring the work of a diverse collection of artists including in alphabetical order:
Paul Bennett, Dragoș Burlacu, Huw Lewis Jones, Josie Jenkins, Martin Jones, Lynette Kay, Lisa Cole Kronenburg, Ruth Morrissey, Matthew Mortimer, Ernesto Muniz, Aurel Tar & Simon A Yorke.
The show is only viewable through the gallery windows wbich will be open from 10am-10pm from Saturday 5 July to Sunday 6 July 2014.

After last year's 'almost sell out show', which proved John is one of Liverpool's most popular and gifted watercolour painters, we are delighted to be showing a collection of completely new work, much of it recently completed which includes landscapes in Italy, Switzerland, France, Lithuania and Cornwall.
Referring to the new exhibition at the Corke Gallery John said "I am delighted with this new collection of paintings because it includes work of some of my favourite places. I always try to capture the essence of the places I paint so it has been a great pleasure to revisit and reaquaint myself with places that hold many happy memories for me.
Born in Cardiff John Pickles was brought up in a family of painters, both his mother and father trained at the Royal College of Art and he has painted since his childhood. He was a town planner and architect by profession and retired as a partner from one of the largest architectural practices in the UK and since then he has travelled widely and painted many of the places he visited. He is especially fond of Italy where he can indulge in his painting and his love of music.
John has exhibited widely across the North West and with the Royal Watercolour Society in London. His work is snapped up quickly by those who admire his ability to capture the beauty and sense of the places he paints. His work is in several collections and he has been commissioned to paint for the University of Liverpool, Holford Associates and Enterprise PLC.John was delighted to have had the opportunity to be part of show with Elizabeth Frink at the Ayling Porteous Gallery in Chester as well as in the Mall Gallery in London.
John exhibits regularly and works primarily in oils and watercolours. His work is collected all over the world and recent commissions have been for corporations and universities.

Artist Talk by Josie Jenkins - 7pm - Friday 25 April 2014
Josie Jenkins whose exhibition Pathos & Entropy has been on show at the Corke Gallery during April will be closing on Friday 25th April 2014 with a talk by Josie about her practice in general, paintings in the current exhibition and especially the painting Geograph Collage with Paper Clips which in September 2013 was selected for the New Lights Art Prize and won the main prize, the Valeria Sykes Award.
Josie studied Fine Art (painting) at Norwich School of Art and Design, graduating in 2002 and has worked as an artist based in Hull and Nottinghamshire before settling in Liverpool. She joined Arena Studios in Liverpool in 2010 and became an active member, working voluntarily as the Arena Gallery Manager since 2011 and as a director between 2011 and 2013.
In 2011 Josie was featured in the BBC2 television series ‘Show Me the Monet’ and was selected by a panel of judges to show her work in the show’s accompanying exhibition at the Royal College of Art, London.
More recently Josie has been represented by Castlegate House Gallery, Cockermouth and The Corke Art Gallery in Liverpool, where she has exhibited new work. Josie has just been invited to do a 3 month residency at the Chinese European Art Center in Xiamen, China, where she plans to paint a series of works to capture the essence of the area regarded as China’s ‘e-waste’ capital where old computers and discarded other electronic equipment is sent to be dismantled and recycled.

Plus a collection of Sculptures by Dave Allan
After a short break I am delighted to be back to open the 2014 season with an exhibition of paintings by Wirral based artist Peter Macaulay in which he continues to explore and develop, what for him has been a lifelong inspiration - the human figure. His figures are usually quickly sketched and at all times treated to a degree of abstraction. He is unafraid to experiment and take risks. He freely distorts anatomy and generally offers an extra dimension to scenes.
Paradoxically, the inspiration for Macaulay's work is leisure. In the exhibition there are numerous depictions of poolside or beach scenes. He moves effortlessly between representation and abstraction and makes great play of the space between these opposing points. The colours sing and despite the free-flowing lines, there is a solid geometry within his compositions.
Above all, there seems to be a tremendous sense of joie de vivre. His work is refreshing and above all, fun so I hope you can come along to see the work, meet the artist and enjoy a complimentary drink or two!
Peter’s work is now in many private collections in the UK and abroad and in 2012 he won the prestigious Charles Oliver award at 'The Wirral Society of Arts Exhibition and was invited to judge the National Acrylic Painters' Association annual exhibition.
The exhibition also features work by sculpture by Dave Allan. The foundation of David Allan's approach is his background in engineering. Moving into management, he never lost his fascination for the raw materials of his craft. Admiration for Barbara Hepworth and her use of local materials, together with the semi-abstract figurative sculpture of Henry Moore, was the source inspiration for much of Allan's work. He has since developed a spare and economic style largely abstract, often with found elements unaltered, demonstrating the pure quality of the materials used. His work has been displayed in several Merseyside galleries and in private collections.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 1 March and runs until Saturday 15th March 2014. The gallery is open Thursday – Saturday between 1pm – 5pm but if you want to call me on 07773 287827 to make an appointment to see the exhibition at another time please do.

New Year Group Show

Martin Greenland: Winner of the 2006 John Moores Painting Prize the paintings on show in the gallery were part of his collection of new works included in the Discerning Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London where he won the 2013 North of England Regional Prize. There should have been six but 3 were sold in London and I sold one in Liverpool so also on show is his large canvas ‘Playground’ before it goes to Tullie House Museum & Gallery which is hosting a solo show of Martin’s paintings to celebrate the purchase of his Lake District inspired painting ‘NationalPark’ for their own collection. Josie Jenkins: After showing in the gallery earlier in 2013 Josie marks her return with several winter themed paintings and as the 2013 winner of the £10,000 Valeria Sykes Prize at New Lights Art in the North. Josie will be showing more new works as well as her winning painting at the Corke Art Gallery later in 2014 when we will be curating a solo show of her work (dates TBC).
Huw Lewis Jones: Modern impressionistic landscapes created by the application of luscious quantities of oil paint with a palette knife to create thick, bold, confident layers and strokes which evoke the rugged landscapes of North Wales around Dollgellau and brilliantly captures the spirit of Wales. Huw recently won in the Merioneth Arts Society annual exhibition and his painting, ‘Hard Choices’, featuring local farmers at the Dollgellau Farmers Market won the People’s Choice Prize.
Lisa Cole Kronenburg: A collection of finely painted works in oil on canvas and also on paper featuring beautiful skies and ambiguous landscapes. Lisa's work conveys a sense of calm and place which is familiar and yet unknown.
Romanian artists Radu Belcin, Flavia Pitiș, Aurel Tar, Francisc Chiuariu, and Dragoș Burlacu: They opened 2013 for us with ‘End of Empires’ which was also shown in St George’s Hall and at the launch of the Romainian Consulate in Liverpool Town Hall early in 2013. The event was hosted by the Romanian Ambassador to the UK and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool. The work on show is a snapshots of the new reality in the former USSR and its effects on people and societies. Lack of freedom and identity issues are brought to the fore by Radu Belcin, childhood in the consumer society is the focus of the Francisc Chiuariu’s series titled ”Forever Ikea” and realist and sensitive, Flavia Pitiș works with close-up childish gestures and habits of the adults. The collective character is ”mirroring” the mass production in Dragoș Burlacu’s oil paintings on steel metal and Aurel Tar’s ”Wonderful Collapse” allegorical multiple panels paintings evoke the great civilization of the Greek European antiquity, staged now under the bailout of the financial crises. Radu Belcin and Flavia Pitiș are about to break internationally so we are delighted to have helped them on their way - see the work in the Corke Art Gallery whilst you still can or see the video on YouTube
Paul Gent: Modern mixed media with pen, ink and wash, featuring compact scenes from Liverpool, the 20cm x 20cm originals are a delight.
Lynette Kay: whose exhibition Abstract Passion includes large abstract canvasses which fill a room with energy and colour.
Felice Beilin: New to gallery with a gorgeous abstract painting inspired by the wild horses of the Camargue in the South of France.
Paul Bennett: Semi-abstract seascape/landscape paintings which are brooding and evoke the power of nature.
Simon A Yorke: Abstract expressionist paintings inspired by Buddhist teachings and contemplation mark the start of a spiritual journey.
George Cannon: Member of the Lake Artists Society George's landscapes are post impressionist in style and often influenced by cubism.
Mel Sullivan: Bright and colourful paintings of plants and flowers – ideal if you want something to brighten up your day and get you through the grey winter months!
Ernesto Muniz: Striking collages from the award winning photographer and artist based in Mexico City who will be showing again in Liverpool later in 2014 after exhibiting in New York.
