About Matthew Mortimer, Fine Artist, Cheshire

Whilst studying Fine Art at St Gregory’s High school in Warrington, Matthew became interested in the subject of landscapes and how landscapes are represented in artistic formats. This fascination continued while studying for his A levels at Carmel College in St Helens where he looked at site in relation to atmospheric landscapes to create a body of oil paintings. From September 2011 until present day Matthew has been studying for his BA Fine Art at Liverpool Hope University where he continued to paint and develop his understanding of the natural, urban and derelict landscapes within Britain.

Matthew's influences consist of the current issues regarding recycling and the sustainability of world resourses in relation to common landscapes and developing brown field sites. Leading artists who have had an impact upon his thinking within this subject are George Shaw, Gerhard Richter and Michael Farley, as well as J.M.W.Turner and J. Contsable.

Throughout the past 3 years, Matthew has contributed his artwork to several successful exhibitions in ‘The Gallery’, Liverpool 2013, ‘Exchange Court’, Liverpool 2014, and his final degree show, ’10,000 Hours’ at Liverpool Hope University, 2014. Matthew contributed to the event management of the Liverpool Contemporary Art Fair in July 2014.

Matthew's work is an investigation into site, location and place within everyday landscapes and his paintings consider traditional and formal matters including composition, technique and subject matter as well as the relationship humans have with the environment and in particular how certain infrastructures can enhance or destroy the perception of a place. Matthews use of found materials help retain a relationship with his subject matter and reinforces his belief in the importance of sustainability and recycling.
