CCCC Community Resources

CCCC Community Announcements

Many helpful recommendations from folks who have lived right here in our own community for years went into pulling this information together, along with volunteer efforts from the Family Connection Foundation, Community Resource Foundation and sponsorship of local churches (like CMCC and CRF). Hopefully what you find in our publications will help make living in Chiang Mai just a little easier…

Criteria

    • Please post your event, trainings, jobs, yard sales ONLY in the CCCC FaceBook group. But NO rental properties please (unless you are a tenant who is subletting).

    • For rentals: Only in our Community Resources Housing Rentals section (not FaceBook) are landlords, owners and real estate agents allowed to post once-a-year Rental announcements. However, if you want to use FaceBook to advertise, then try one of these other FaceBook groups (Note: these FB groups are NOT in any way associated with nor operated by the CCCC): Farang Chiang Mai Real Estate, House for rent in Chiang Mai or Rent & Sale House in Chiang Mai

    • For buying/selling items

Please only use our ‘sister’ group (do not post any items or collections of items for sale in the CCCC FaceBook group whatsoever -- including cars). Instead use:https://www.facebook.com/grou…/ChiangMaiChristianBuyandSell/ or use one of the many other Chiang Mai selling-focused groups listed in our Transitions section.

Note: you are permitted to post yard sale events in our FaceBook group which list a specific date, time and place (include a map if possible).

    • Kindly refer to the CCCC Policy for other criteria.

    • The Chiang Mai Christian Community Classifieds was established in 2001 to help oversea volunteers, and Thai workers to navigate living in Chiang Mai. It is a means of helping people help one another -- whether finding a job, sharing useful suggestions about local resources, finding an inexpensive place to live, or locating a helpful service. Many Thai people have found gainful employment using this community service and folks have now used our free interactive Chiang Mai Community Map more than 80,000 times (50K in just the latest edition, a non-profit effort sponsored by Thai foundations and local churches and created using standard Google copyrighted tools). The CCCC volunteer team still continues to "tweak" this Community Resources webpage periodically. If you would like to tell friends about this helpful community service, just have them web search “CCCC Latest”.

To subscribe to the popular announcements that many in our community post on the CCCC Classifieds FaceBook group please join ‘CCCC Classifieds’ at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ccccclassifieds/.

If you have an important upcoming event, please be sure to post your event only in our FaceBook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/ccccclassifieds. We typically include the kinds of events which one would find listed in an online church bulletin -- including a home that you leasing or renting and want to sublet while you are away temporarily (Note: please be sure to specify it is a sublet so folks will know you are not an owner/landlord/agent).

We will continue to update this Community Resources web page periodically as an archive and compendium of helpful Chiang Mai community information -- useful as an orientation guide not only for those who just arrived but also as a resource for those who live here throughout the year.

Living in Chiang Mai

    • Join our CCCC FaceBook Group to learn of the many local events going on in our community at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ccccclassifieds/ ;

    • Get a copy of the 82-page booklet "Helpful Hints for Getting Settled in Chiang Maipublished by the Chiang Mai Community Church. Many have used this for their introduction to Chiang Mai. Cost: 50 baht -- one of the best guides for Chiang Mai living you can find. Here is how to find a copy.;

    • See Lori Rowe’s latest Chiang Mai Resource Guide. Contains a rich assortment of helpful topics touching on many aspects of Chiang Mai living -- prepared by someone with an extensive background from which to draw in working with others. [She and her husband, Bruce, raised their family here and have faithfully served this community for more than 20 years.];

    • Refer often to the valuable CCCC Community Resources or Chiang Mai Community Map to help you find over 1000 useful tips and places around town. Google has told us these have been used by thousands over the years living here in northern Thailand and throughout the world;

    • Exactly when do you have to next report to Thai Immigration? Click here to visit our Immigration Services Help. It may clear up your responsibilities for reporting to local Immigration authorities. See our recent updates to the TM.30 Reporting Cycle;

    • See hints for setting up Banking in Thailand;

    • While most of us may not like to think about contingencies, please be sure that you and your family have sufficient health care coverage in place. Self-insuring too often proves impractical and fails, especially if you should fall unconscious from a sudden injury or serious illness. Family and friends are stuck with having to quickly raise or obtain the needed funds. If you work as part of an organisation/foundation, they should give you further guidance in this area. (Note: the CCCC Classifieds team has no affiliation with insurance agencies and other than listing a few service locations, along with hundreds of other businesses on our community map, we do not give specific recommendations -- other than to say you need to have reasonable health provision.) FYI - typically health care costs are lower at local government hospitals rather than private, and there are highly regarded medical and dental teaching hospitals in Chiang Mai (see Hospitals). Your country embassy may be able to assist with communications in an emergency -- once again, please Register Online with Your Embassy... for the sake of your loved ones as well!

National Preparedness

A helpful guide called “National Preparedness Month” has been prepared by ready.gov. While admittedly geared to life in the U.S., their excellent Make-A-Plan advice is directly adaptable to expats living overseas (Translations available: العربية | 中文 | Español | Français | हिन्दी | 日本語 | 한국어 | Pусский | Tagalog | Tiếng Việt) | If you do nothing else, register online with your own embassy here in Thailand (21 different countries). Lastly, consider this article “How to Deal with a Crisis Overseas” from GOV.UK. Tailor your plan as necessary with information from your embassy. (09/06)

Register Online with Your Embassy Now

Please see CCCC Community Resources Consular Affairs/Services or see the travel advice page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand | Note: if you know of other consular links that could assist your fellow citizens living abroad, could you kindly let the CCCC team know by writing crfthailand@gmail.com. Special thanks to the good folks at the CEC for their thought-provoking topic “Does Your Embassy Know How to Contact You?”, and also for their helpful links for the British Commonwealth. (08/2016)

Banking in Thailand

    • Transferring Funds - As you may already know, two of the largest banks in Thailand are Bangkok Bank (BB) and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB). There are also many other banks from which to choose (you may want to ask a friend about their experiences with various banks.) For receiving funds from your home country, be aware that wire transfers, while a relatively safe option, also can be expensive. For Americans, Bangkok Bank has the unique convenience of having a New York branch where you can use more inexpensive EFT (ACH) to transfer funds directly to your account here in Thailand, thus circumventing expensive wire transfers. In fact, this method is deemed secure enough by the US Social Security Admin. for them to make regular monthly direct deposits to one's BB Thailand acct. number. (The main requirement in the later case is that the BB account must be in the name of the SS recipient only.) You can also use this method to receive joint account transfers from a U.S. bank or credit union as well . Upon receipt, the Bangkok Bank - NY branch will transfer these funds directly to your Thailand BB acct. For charges and methods, see Bangkok Bank’s Fund Transfer website. (If the U.S. SS option is something you would ever want to look into, be sure to bring your Soc. Scty. card with you when you come to Thailand -- Note: if you list a Thailand address with the U.S. SSA, they may send you their annual SS Form 7162 to verify “If you are still alive?”.). [Also note that other countries have their own rules and requirements to qualify for their retirement pensions or social benefits, such as, you must return to your home country for so many days each year to remain qualified (to our knowledge the U.S. does not impose such a requirement). Check with your home country government.]

    • ATMs - Of course, you can also use ATMs to receive funds from your home country. However, be warned -- these fees can quickly add up! Thai banks impose heavy fees of 150-200 baht-per each ATM transaction! While some banking institutions back in your home country may reimburse you for some of these fees, others might add a Foreign Bank fee. Credit card and ATM companies also will deduct an additional 1% international fee or give you a low THB exchange rate. Monitor your home country and Thailand banking statements (many are available online). [The worse case which we have heard was one person who was naively surprised at the end of their first year that they literally had paid out thousands of baht (and hundreds of U.S. dollars) in fees!] Charles Schwab is one company in the U.S. that will reimburse these fees. There are others as well-- check with your home bank or credit union. [Note: Others please share information or suggestions how to transfer funds inexpensively from other countries -- please let the CCCC team know the details by writing us at crfthailand@gmail.com -- thank you.]

    • Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and Checks: Personal checking is not popular in Thailand. Thai banks may reluctantly accept personal checks for deposit but impose high fees of 300 THB or greater per check and usually have long float periods before crediting these to your account. Some Thai banks will let you set up Electronic Fund Transfers with utility companies here to pay monthly bills (you can also pay some bills at Central Festival, a local popular shopping mall, and at some 7-11s). Larger banks may also offer online transfers even to accounts at other banks. Most Thai banks can also issue you a debit ATM card which you can conveniently use at major stores. International MasterCard and Visa cards are both readily accepted (but again watch for those creeping international charges). Some credit card companies will not only waive their international fees but will reward or credit a percentage of all purchases back into your account (even for foreign purchases you make in Thailand). Please see this helpful article from Money Crashers: "7 Things to Consider When Using Credit Cards Overseas" - http://www.moneycrashers.com/using-credit-cards-overseas/

(NEW) Easter Dinner - So far the CCCC has only learned of one restaurant that is serving an Easter Sunday Buffet, 1 April 2018:

Christmas Past Dinners - For future reference following is a list of local restaurants which have offered Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Dinner during previous Christmas holiday seasons. Some (e.g., Bake & Bite, CM Smoke House and Northern Farm Products) were also offering pick-up or delivery service last Christmas. Check their given FaceBook or web links for details.

Kindly use this only as a reference guide. For current times, dates and any promotions check each restaurant's FaceBook or web link listed below to see if they are once again offering any specials for Christmas 2018. [Note: if offered, most likely advance booking will be required!] Also note If their promotion still contains last year's date, then contact them to see if they are currently offering any new specials.

[Sources: a number of these were suggested on other social media/websites last year. This is not intended as commercial or free advertising! We have attempted to be equally fair in consolidating names/info here to help you with your Christmas planning. Details were sourced from the individual restaurant's own public link, when possible.]

Full Disclosure: None of these establishments are associated with the CCCC or any of its volunteers. The Legend below was created by the CCCC team as a free guide to assist with planning. Map links were constructed from the CCCC's free Chiang Mai Map - CCCC (based on Google Map technology and protected by Google copyright). While opening any of the following MAP links may increment the number of times the CCCC Map is viewed (Google lists this in the CCCC map banner), there is absolutely no remuneration received by the CCCC nor any of its volunteers. The same principle applies to the entire CCCC website. This is simply provided by the CCCC as a free community service.
