The first time most people will have heard the expression Barrett’s oesophagus is when they come for a gastroscopy. This is either for symptoms of reflux or whilst undergoing the procedure for a completely unrelated reason.

Endoscopy is any procedure where a fibre optic tube is passed into the body.Above you can see a fibreoptic endoscope.

When it is passed into the oesophagus and stomach we term this a gastroscopy or upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

In the other picture you can see what Barrett’s oesophagus looks like when the endoscope is passed into the oesophagus. The pale lining is the normal oesophagus and the more salmon pink area is Barrett’s oesophagus.
