What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is bringing awareness to the present moment without judgment. This is a great coping skill because oftentimes anxiety and depression have us living in the future worrying and dreading what could be or living in the past regretting and ruminating on what could have been. There are many different techniques that promote mindfulness including meditations, positive visualization, grounding, yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, and deep breathing.

We often carry stress in our bodies physically, and progressive muscle relaxation involves tensing various parts of the body and subsequently relaxing them in order to relieve tension. Be sure not to tense muscles to the point of straining or discomfort while doing these exercises and be mindful to adapt as needed if you have any injuries.
