Routine Maintenance

La Loma Native Garden has a unique plan for maintenance of the garden.

At each tree along the path is a rock labeled with a street name in the neighborhood.

Residents who live on that street are asked to help maintain ten feet around their tree This can include weeding, trimming, deadheading, and replacing dead plants, also removing debris, and sprucing up the rock label if needed. At times checking drip irrigation may be needed.

Look for your La Loma street: Encina, Conejo, Rosina, Severin, Camellia, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Edgebrook, Phoenix, Las Palmas, Oakbrook, ....

Need more info on what to do

Volunteers are also needed at times for weeding, raking the path, blowing leaves off the asphalt walkway, and replacing mulch.

Weeding parties will be posted a few times a year at the bulletin board and on the La Loma Facebook page. If you are interested in volunteering and need more information, you can contact Rhonda Allen at the garden site, or by email at rhondasaddress@sbcglobal.net, on facebook or by leaving a message at the bulletin board.

Special Work Days

Fall Planting Day. Each year between Oct.1 - Nov. 30 there will be an announced planting day for new plants. Check the Facebook page or Website. (Nov.3, 2018 this year.)

Love Modesto Day. Each April we have a work day on the Saturday of Love Modesto Day to spruce up the garden. Dates vary, so check the website or bulletin board for this day. Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools and gloves.

Respecting the native garden idea

Please note that this is a community garden and all residents of La Loma Neighborhood are encouraged to get involved, however

since the goal is to keep it a native garden, we want to control what is planted. Though many beautiful ornamental plants might make the garden look pretty, we do not want these type of plants brought to the garden. We hope to maintain a natural habitat to encourage native pollinators. There are many plants already present that are non-native and we hope to limit this in the future. Thank you for respecting this goal.

Yes, we do want and need volunteers! Noone is paid to help with maintenance. To keep the garden looking good, we need the neighborhood's support. Many hands make like work!

During the summer and fall months we will be hosting weeding blitzes in the garden each Saturday morning for 30 minutes

starting at 8:00 am. Stay longer if you can. Bring a trowel or digging tool and gloves. Look for us in the garden.

Weeding is the number one ongoing need in the garden!

Especially since we are attempting to remove weeds without chemicals.

Get to know the weeds. See weed identification info.

Currently our three main weeds to remove are Bermuda grass, bindweed and spurge.
