Inv. Holmes N. Smith Jr.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God... Matthew 5:9

Beginning of Watch...

Holmes Nathaniel Smith, Jr. was born on June 15, 1969 in Columbia, SC to the late Master Sergeant Holmes Nathaniel Smith, Sr. and Frances Elizabeth Smith. Holmes was a proud Raider, graduating from Keenan High School in Columbia, SC in 1987. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Criminal Justice from South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC in 1995.

On September 19, 1998, he was joined in holy matrimony to the former Tonia Mallett of Manning, SC. They married after wonderful 6 year courtship and were thankful for the 22 years they had together. God blessed them with three wonderful boys who love and adore their father.

Holmes was baptized into the body of Christ on July 11, 2010 by Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough. Within the last year, he joined Greenhill Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu, SC where he sang on the Male Chorus. He also worked with the Junior Brotherhood and the youth of the church. He was content to work in the background, always concerned that everyone and everything was taken care of. He also joined Springhill Lodge #188.

A dedicated Law Enforcement Officer who was more than happy to answer his call to service, took extreme pride in protecting and serving his community. He worked in law enforcement for nearly 20 years serving as a Police Officer for the City of Manning, a Game Warden for Sumter County Department of Natural Services and a Sheriff’s Deputy for the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office. He not only loved the job, but he cherished the camaraderie of his fellow deputies. He took his duties as a LEO as his ministry. He did not mind the late night calls, the early morning emergencies, and sacrificing family time to serve his community.

He was a HUGE Miami Dolphin Fan and tortured anyone who opposed them. He was also a skilled wooden jewelry carver. Zuri Udo pieces have been loved by many and each piece was hand crafted with love.

On Wednesday, November 5, 2014, Holmes worked his final shift, when God called His faithful servant home to receive his reward, for his work here on Earth is finished. He was killed in a one car collision while on duty, returning from a meeting with SLED Agents in Sumter County.

He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy of love: wife, Tonia Mallett Smith and their three sons, Holmes “Smitty” Smith, Joshua Smith and Isaac Smith; a son, Jaden Smith; Jordan Blanding, whom he cared for as a son; mother, Frances Elizabeth Smith; aunt, Shirley Smith; sister, Rhonda (Marcus) Abrams, all of Columbia, SC; his in-laws, William (Ruth) Mallett of Manning; one sister-in-law, Veronica Mallett of Chapin, SC; one brother-in-law, Kevin Mallett of Manning, SC; godsiblings, Larry Stivender and Francetta Muhammad; three nieces, Dahlia Mallett, Eboni Mallett and Daisy Mallet (goddaughter), a cousin, Althea Elmore; and a host of dear friends, and other relatives.
