Shorebirds

Shorebirds are my favorite carving subject. Living here on PEI I find myself at the beach often where I can observe these birds on a regular basis. Their sleek bodies, odd shaped bills and various poses make for an unlimited supply of reference material. I'm particularly captivated by the way they rest on only one foot. That's the reason most of my Shorebirds are displayed on a dowel with either a driftwood base or one that I make myself. My natural finish birds are done with 4 to 6 coats of Tru-Oil and are carved in Butternut. Occasionally I'll use Mahogany, Cedar or Pine if I find the grain interesting. Price on these birds is $60 to $80. My painted birds are carved in Pine, Cedar or Basswood and are finished with Acrylics. These are also priced from $60 to $80.
