Annotated Bibliography of Research used for Classroom Practices

Boaler, J. (2021). Assessment and grading strategies. YouCubed. https://www.youcubed.org/resource/assessment-grading/

This site includes three articles curated by Dr. Jo Boaler, a world leader in mathematics education working out of Stanford. The articles discuss different assessment practices that I will be implementing this year in class.

Boaler, J. (2019) Limitless Mind: Learn, lead, and live without barriers. Harper Collins.

This book is a great read for parents and educators alike. It's content is not specific to math class, despite being written by a math educator. Using current neuroscience research, Boaler debunks the myth that our brains are fixed from birth, telling us instead that we can always grow.

Boaler, J. (2016). Mathematical Mindsets: Unleashing students' potential through creative math, inspiring messages and innovating teaching. Jossey-Bass.

This book is the predecessor to Limitless Minds, and targets mathematics education specifically. A lot of the ideas included in Building Thinking Classrooms are mirrored in this book, and will be implemented here.

Liljedahl, P. (2021). Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics. Corwin.

Dr. Peter Liljedahl is a professor of mathmatics education at the Universirty of British Columbia. This book summarizes and explains years of research into mathematics education, in order to move from a traditional classroom model, to one where students are thinking much more. A lot of the practices found in this book inspired my teaching.

Smith, M.S. & Stein, M.K. (2018). 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions. MCTM.

This book provides insight into classroom lesson structure using 5 practices for making sure that, during discussions, students feel supported.
