Feb 15th

Good morning,

Last week we continued on with our circles unit by looking more at proportions of Circles, and the respective Arc Lengths and Sector Areas.

I did end up switching around the Situational and Circles Test in order to allow students to have more time time to practice the application questions of circles for the Situational Problems. This week we are looking at Complex Shapes (p150) with Circles and Word Problems (148-149). The slides for these sections are on Teams, please review them if you miss class! We will be working through the Circles Test on Wednesday and Thursday (16-17th). The next few classes we will be doing some general review of past units in preparation for the Situational on Feb 22-23rd. Good practice for this can be found on p116-118 of the Pink Book or p154-158 of the Blue Book.

Feb 9th

Hello students and parents.

Last week we continued on with our circles unit and had a C4U to check our understanding of this towards the end of the week. Various assessments have also been returned recently (i.e. exams, situationals, etc. ).

This week, we are wrapping up most of the remaining components of circles (6.4 Arc and Central Angle, 6.6 Area of a Sector and Disc). Early next week, we will look into various application problems, before moving into our circles assessments before the March Break. Please note the upcoming assessments: Situationals Feb 15th-17th , Circles Unit Test Feb 22nd. Note that the Situational is broken into smaller sections, but most students shouldn't require the full class each day if they have practiced the material.

If students are missing class this week please complete sections 6.4 and 6.6 in the workbook (starts on p138) and make sure you review the slides relevant for these sections (slides are uploaded to TEAMS).

Jan 19th

Happy New Year to all. Please note that I refrained from an update last week as I was posting daily updates on Teams for Virtual Learning.

Last week we worked through some online Module/Activities to help refresh our material from first term. Students also had a chance to work on their Memory Aids, which I will be collecting this Friday and assessing for clarity and completeness. This week, we will be looking at Modes of Representation (specifically Cartesian Planes). We have already touched on this briefly, but will be finishing up this week, and then wrapping up Term 1 with a Modes Situational on Tuesday Jan 25th. I have uploaded the slides for this unit onto Teams pages for each class.

Practice pages for any students who miss class this week can be found on p90-94, and p105-108.

Dec 14th

I will keep today's update short as a lengthy email was sent out last week explaining our assessment process this week. Tuesday-Thursday is C2 Midterm assessments in class. Friday will be to finish that up and start looking a bit more at some graphs.

I am around for lunch remediation on Thursday this week!

Dec 7th

Today's post is a little bit longer, thanks in advance for reading it through!

Last week we wrapped up most of the Algebra unit with 3, 4, and 5 step (level) equations. This week, we will be practicing word problems and preparing for the Algebra Unit test on Thursday, December 9th. Some suggested range for the review material would be p73-p82 and p134-135 (though I would encourage you to pick a few problems from each page to use your time best). If you are having trouble, there are many resources listed under the "Useful Links" tab. A specific one I would highlight, is the Grade 8 Math Youtube Playlist that breaks down most of the concepts in our curriculum. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goOP2-uv5bw&list=PLqyW0Q4VO_vHDgLXUuKdLufwEubWU_3H5).

In the coming weeks, we will be doing review for some larger upcoming assessments. Specifically, there will be an End of Term C2 Exam in class from Tuesday - Thursday next week (Dec 14-16th) as well as a C1 Situational Exam in the new year in January. These assessments will cover our 3 units thus far: 1. Proportions 2. Polygons and 3. Algebra. I plan to create various Review lessons of the next few weeks to help with this, but its is important that students also take some time to refresh themselves on past units on their own time.

I am around for lunch remediation on Wednesday this week!

Nov 30th

December is here! Thanks to all parents who reached out during Parent Teacher night. I enjoyed discussing best ways to continue supporting your students.

Last week we finished Algebraic Expressions and moved into Algebraic Equations. We looked at 1 and 2 Step (level) equations last week, and will be bringing in 3, 4, and 5 step (level) equations this week. Along with some word problems, this will wrap up our unit. We will spend a few days next week reviewing for our Algebra Unit test on Thursday, December 9th. If class is missed this week, please aim to complete p64-66 and p124-130 of the workbook before Monday.

I am around for lunch remediation on Friday this week!

Good afternoon,

Last week we started our Algebra unit by reviewing Number Sense and Integer Operations.

This week we will be working on Simplifying Algebraic Expressions and Translating Words to Algebraic Expressions. If class is missed this week, please aim to complete up to around p53 of the workbook.

Nov 2nd

Happy November! I hope everyone had a good Halloween, I know I saw many fun costumes in our halls on Friday.

Last week we wrapped up our Polygons unit with a test and situational. I saw many students that made good strides in understanding the material better this unit.

We now head into our Algebra unit for the next few weeks. We will use this week to refresh ourselves on some Number Sense and Integer Operations. If class is missed this week, please aim to complete up to p50 of the workbook.

Oct 26th

Good day to all. Last week, we finished up the curriculum for our Polygons Unit by looking at Constructions, and Calculations of Area for Regular Polygons.

This week, we are doing review both Monday and Tuesday. This time will be used to practice what we have learned, and to update our Memory Aids with the material for this unit.

*Memory Aids are a 2-sided sheet that students are allowed for any assessment in Math (Quizzes, Tests, Exams). They are allowed to write helpful formulas and diagrams to minimize the amount of Memorization needed. An example Memory Aid for this unit can be found on our Teams page.

Our Assessments this week include a Test on Wednesday Oct 27th, and a Situational on Thursday Oct 28th. Suggested review material for the test is on p35-37 of the Workbook. There is also good practice questions on Constructions and Area on p28-31.

Have a good week!

Oct 15th

I hope everyone is having a good long weekend and students are able to take a mental break from school. It has been a busy month and half, and I am sure a this few days will be a welcome pause.

The prior week we completed our assessment of Proportions. Students who missed either the Test or the Situational will be asked to make this up this coming week on Wednesday at lunch.

During the past partial week (2 days), we kept going on Polygons by examining their Interior Angles and Diagonals. At some point this weekend, students should complete the last bit of homework that was assigned in class (p23-25). If you are getting stuck, I encourage you to watch the videos made by our Grade 8 Math team on the Useful Links tab of this website.

This coming week, we will be looking at Triangles inside Polygons, How To Construct Regular Polygons, and starting Perimeter/Area. It is suggested that students have completed up to p28 by the end of the week.

Oct 4th

Happy October and I hope everyone had a good weekend.

Last week we completed our Proportions Assessments, congrats all on finishing!

This week we are beginning our new unit of Polygons. We will mostly use this week to review material from Grade 7 Area & Perimeter and angles. Some good Review pages from the workbook would be p38-43.

Please make sure all students have the required Materials for the course by this point. Especially in this unit, students will need Rulers and a Geometry Set.

Sept 27th

It's starting to cool down as we reach the end of September. That means it's assessment week in Math!

Last week we consolidated our Proportions unit through some in class activities and workbook p18-22. Our assessment this week will include everything in the workbook up to and including those pages. I am around for extra help at lunch tomorrow (Sept 28th).

Our first unit test will be tomorrow Tuesday (Sept 28th) and our unit Situational will be Wednesday (Sept 30th). Thursday will be overflow for assessment and Friday we will introduce our next unit.

Sept 20th

I hope everyone was able to enjoy their long weekend.

Last week we dove into more proportions by looking at Rates and Ratios, and some Word Problems. We completed the workbook pages up to p15, if you missed classes please ensure you review these pages.

For this upcoming week, we will be practicing these concepts and preparing for our Unit Test on Friday (Sept 24th). If class is missed this week, please prepare for this by completing p18-22. We will also be doing a Situational Assignment on Wednesday (Sept 22nd).

***Update: Unit Test will now actually be Tuesday (Sept 28th) to allow students sufficient time to study.

Sept 13th

Happy Monday to all!

Last week we began our Proportions unit by practicing conversions between decimals, percentages and fractions, and introducing Ratios. We completed the workbook pages up to p11, if you missed classes please ensure you review these pages.

For this upcoming week, we will be exploring Rates and Proportions. If class is missed this week, please review p12-15. We will be having our second C4U (Check 4 Understanding) at the end of the week on Thursday.

Sept 7th

I hope we are all slowly getting settled after our first week of school.

This week we will be finishing up our review of Fractions (p2-6). We will then be moving into our first unit of Proportions by the end of the week.

Please note that I have now added the school calendar to our "Files" and deleted the Calendar tab to simplify the website. At this time, I am not able to provide our future class itineraries as the content will vary depending on our progress. For important dates and deadlines, please feel free to subscribe to the Remind system (instructions found on the homepage of this website).

Aug 31st

Welcome to class. Please make sure you take some time to explore this site. Note that there will still be some additions to come (including a calendar).
Please complete a short "Get to know you quiz" for Mr. Bienzle by the end of the week (Sept 4th) : https://forms.gle/87yhf71ikHFsubyA6
