Feb 2nd

Good morning,

Last week students worked on Week 2 of the Balancing Finance Project (we added a fun little extra component of "Friend/Date Night that can be found on Teams"). We also prepared for the Situational this week. It is very important that students practice and understand:

  1. Converting between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.

  2. Finding the Percentage and Fraction of a Number

  3. Percent applications (i.e. taxes, discounts)

We will be having a Situational on the concepts posted above on Thursday (Feb 3rd). Good practice pages for this are on p104-110. I have also passed out a Practice Situational in class today. We updated our Memory Aids yesterday; pictures of the new parts can be found on Teams.

I am around for remediation at lunch on Thursday this week!

Jan 26th

Good day to all.

Last week students had a chance to catch up their Balancing Finances Project (Week 1) while we had a look at decimals. This week we are looking at percentages and their applications. It is very important that students practice and understand:

  1. Converting between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.

  2. Finding the Percentage of a Number

  3. Percent applications (i.e. taxes, discounts)

We will also complete the second week of Balancing Finances Project in the coming days.

We will be having a Situational on the concepts posted above on Thursday next week (Feb 3rd). Good practice pages for this are on p104-110.

I am around for remediation at lunch on Monday next week!

Jan 19th

Happy New Year to all. Please note that I refrained from an update last week as I was posting daily updates on Teams for Virtual Learning.

Last week we completed the first week of our 3-Week project: Balancing Finances. Since this week is short, it is a chance for students to get caught up on any tasks from last week while we switch back to some course work in the workbook on Decimals. By the end of this week students should aim to have completed p90-92 and p104-105.

Please note that on Friday I will be collecting student Memory Aids and assessing them for completeness and clarity. I am around for remediation at lunch on Friday this week!

Dec 14th

Last week students worked on BEDMAS and our Order of Operations, along with translating words and phrases into numbers and symbols.

This week, we are preparing for our Fractions Test on Thursday. We have finished all the fractions material and are practicing word problems today and tomorrow. We will finish off the week with a quick look at Averages. By the end of this week students should aim to have completed up to p72, as well as p80.

I am around for remediation at lunch on Thursday this week! There will be a Fractions Unit Test on Thursday December 16th.

Dec 7th

We are into the home stretch before the Holidays!

Last week students worked on Fraction Division, then we put a pause on fractions to start on Exponents. We finished off the week with some in class "no-bake chocolate peanut squares".... which were hectic but worth it. Please note that there is a short follow-up assignment from this that I am collecting this week from students.

This week, we are looking at BEDMAS and our Order of Operations, along with translating words and phrases into numbers and symbols. By the end of this week students should aim to have completed up to p66.

I am around for remediation at lunch on Wednesday this week! There will be a Fractions Unit Test on Thursday December 16th.

Nov 30th

December is here! Thanks to all parents who reached out during Parent Teacher night. I enjoyed discussing best ways to continue supporting your students.

Last week students worked more on Adding and Subtracting various fractions, while also starting to introduce Multiplication of Fractions. We finished off with a brief C4U, which should be returned to students tomorrow.

This week, we are looking at Fraction Division, starting to introduce exponents, and finishing the week of with a fun food creation project in class! By the end of this week students should aim to have completed up to p61.

I am around for remediation at lunch on Tuesday and Friday this week!

Nov 23rd

Good evening. I am looking forward to meeting parents at Parent-Teacher Night later this week. Here's what's on going on in class:

Last week students worked on adding and subtracting fractions, both Proper and Mixed. We completed the situational in class, and had a reassessment of the Pizza question from our Fractions Test.

This week, we are continuing on with our Fraction Operations by looking at Multiplication and Division which will lead us into Number Sense and Order of Operations. We will then finish the week off by looking at Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Fractions. By the end of this week students should aim to have completed up to p57. We will also be having a brief C4U on Addition/Subtraction of Mixed Fractions on Thursday.

I am around for remediation at lunch on Wednesday this week!

Nov 16th

Greetings!

Last week students completed their fractions test and they were returned today. In general, many students struggled with this. I have explained to them that we will be reassessing the last long answer question later this week, but students need to practice this material in order to be successful.

Today we did a practice situational in preparation for tomorrow's actual Situational. We will then finish the week off by looking at Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Fractions. By the end of this week students should aim to have completed p53.

I am around for remediation at lunch on Friday this week!

Nov 9th

Good afternoon,

Today students are writing Fractions 1 Test. For the next few days, we will be looking at Addition and Subtraction of Fractions. By the end of this week students should aim to have completed p50 and p51.

We are likely looking at a Situational Test sometime earlier next week, possibly Tuesday November 16th. We will be writing a practice situational in class on Monday next week.

Nov 2nd

Happy November! I hope everyone had a good Halloween, I know I saw many fun costumes in our halls on Friday.

We did end up slowing down a little bit last week and didn't make it as far as projected in the last post. We ended up discussing various types of numbers and Factors along with Greatest Common Factors. It is expected that students have completed up to p39 by this point.

This week we are looking at Lowest Common Multiples and Equivalent/Simplified Fractions. We will be having a C4U (Check for Understanding) mid-week and then do some review for our Fractions 1 Test on Tuesday November 9th. By the end of this week students should aim to have completed up to p47.

Oct 26th

Good day to all.

Last week we worked on Comparing and Ordering various fractions, and trying to place them on a number line. It is expected that students have completed up to p35-36 by this point.

This coming week, we will be looking at Simplifying fractions and Finding Equivalent fractions. We will also be working on some Number Sense by reviewing Factors and various types of Numbers. We will likely be approaching p42 by the end of the week, but it may require a couple more days next week.

Oct 15th

I hope everyone is having a good long weekend and students are able to take a mental break from school. It has been a busy month and half, and I am sure a this few days will be a welcome pause.

The prior week we completed our assessment of Area and Perimeter. Students who missed either the Test or the Situational will be asked to make this up this coming week on Wednesday.

During the past partial week (2 days), we kept going on fractions to help students reinforce the idea of Improper and Mixed Fractions. At some point this weekend, students should complete the last bit of homework that was assigned in class (p31-32). If you are getting stuck, I encourage you to read p30, or watch the videos made by our Grade 7 Math team on the Useful Links tab of this website.

This coming week, we will be looking at Comparing different fractions and Ordering fractions on a number line. It is suggested that students have completed up to p36 by the end of the week.

Oct 4th

Happy October and I hope everyone had a good weekend.

Last week we had our unit test. This week, we will be completing our assessment of Area and Perimeter with a Situational on Tuesday (Oct 5th). Good review material for this would be the application questions on p21-24 of the workbook. *Note this test was postponed from last week to allow for extra revision.

After this we will continue into our new unit of Fractions on p26, likely finishing the week somewhere around p29.

Please make sure all students have the required Materials for the course by this point.

Sept 27th

It's starting to cool down as we reach the end of September. That means it's assessment week in Math!

Last week we looked at Finding Base and Height from Area (p13-15), Complex Shapes (p16-17), and Word Problems (p18). Our assessment this week will include everything in the workbook up to and including those pages. I am around for extra help at lunch tomorrow (Sept 28th).

Our first unit test will be on Wednesday (Sept 29th) and our unit Situational will be Thursday (Sept 30th). The remaining days this week will be used for Review/Practice.
*Note that the test has been moved back a day from the previous post to allow for extra revision.

Sept 20th

I hope everyone was able to enjoy their long weekend.

Last week we looked at area and perimeter for 6 different polygons (shapes): Rectangles, Squares, Parallelograms, Rhombus', Trapezoids and Triangles. We completed the workbook pages from 10-12. If you missed classes please ensure you review these pages.

For this upcoming week, we will be looking at Finding Base and Height from Area (p13-15), Complex Shapes (p16-17), and Word Problems (p18).

Our first unit test will be next Tuesday (Sept 28th) and our unit Situational will be Thursday (Sept 30th). The remaining days next week will be used for Review/Practice.

Sept 13th

Happy Monday to all!

Last week we began our Area and Perimeter unit by getting used to some different shapes and vocabulary. We completed the workbook pages up to p9, if you missed classes please ensure you review these pages.

For this upcoming week, we will be looking more closely at Area and Perimeter calculations. If class is missed, please review p10-12. We will be having our second C4U (Check 4 Understanding) at the end of the week on Thursday.

Sept 7th

I hope we are all slowly getting settled after our first week of school.

This week we will be finishing up our review of Measurement Conversions, Vocabulary, and Rounding (p2-6). We will then be moving into our first unit of Area and Perimeter by the end of the week.

Please note that I have now added the school calendar to our "Files" and deleted the Calendar tab to simplify the website. At this time, I am not able to provide our future class itineraries as the content will vary depending on our progress. For important dates and deadlines, please feel free to subscribe to the Remind system (instructions found on the homepage of this website).

Aug 31st

Welcome to class. Please make sure you take some time to explore this site. Note that there will still be some additions to come (including a calendar).
Please complete a short "Get to know you quiz" for Mr. Bienzle by the end of the week (
