Become an FASD Prevention Champion!
Are you already a champion?
You might already be a champion if you do any of these:
routinely ask your clients about their alcohol use;
raise awareness about FASDs and preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancies among your clients and colleagues;
share FASD and FASD-prevention training opportunities with your colleagues;
support the implementation of universal alcohol screening and brief intervention procedures in your place of practice.
You don't need to have a wealth of knowledge or experience to be a champion - just a willingness to be involved!
There are many ways to be a champion!
Easy, beginner-friendly activities
Putting up posters and flyers in waiting rooms, classrooms, exam rooms, and other high traffic areas.
Distributing information to your colleagues about online FASD and alcohol screening and brief intervention training opportunities.
Hosting brown bag lunch and learn with colleagues using NPWH webinars or CDC micro-learning videos.
Have more time or ready to learn more?
If you have more time or are ready to learn more, other activities could include:
Joining our FASD Champion Speaker’s Bureau and collaborating with us to give training and conference presentations.
Promoting the use of alcohol screening and brief intervention tools in your practice setting.
Promoting the integration of FASD and prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies-related content into midwifery and nursing curricula.
Whatever you choose, we can help and support you by providing resources and technical assistance.
Our champions are nurses, midwives, and advanced nurse practitioners and each engages in different types of champion activities. Some provide presentations to health care providers or community members, others teach nursing or midwifery students, some work to engage their colleagues or fellow students on the topic, and some sit on regional or statewide boards to influence policy related to FASDs or the prevention of alcohol-related harms.
