It's sometimes easier to show than tell. This chart can help nurses and midwives discuss the risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy with their patients. It shows the different times during fetal development when the baby may be most vulnerable to alcohol exposure.

Some people may believe that the womb can act as a filter to alcohol, acting as a protective barrier to the developing fetus. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Healthy Mom & Baby magazine has articles and resources written for and to support healthy moms and healthy pregnancies, preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancies and FASDs, and other related topics, including mothers' perspectives. Their Ask a Nurse feature is a great source of information on frequent topics of conversation, such as drinking alcohol while breastfeeding.
