Kvennahlaup

Kvennahlaup is held worldwide, with the first Icelandic "Women's Walk" held June 30, 1990, in connection with the Sports Festival of Iceland, as a way to encourage women to be active and participate in sport. Men, women, children, and dogs are all encouraged to join the fun! The Walk is sponsored by the Icelandic insurance company, Sjóvá and the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland.

The first Kvennahlaup in Minnesota was held in 2013 at Lake Harriet, organized by Sigga Guðmundsdóttir. It was traditionally held in June, often in conjunction with the Icelandic National Day celebration around the date of June 17. Beginning in 2021, Kvennahlaup in Iceland is being held in September and here in Minnesota we will follow that change, holding the walk immediately following the Icelandic Hekla Club organizational meeting. For more information, contact info@heklaclub.org or Hekla Facebook Page.

Kvennahlaup 2022 - This year the Icelandic Olympic Committee decided to sunset Kvennahlaup as an individual event. Everyone is encouraged to remain active!

The Icelandic Olympic organization will no longer be creating new t-shirts each year in an attempt to be more environmentally conscious. Walkers are encouraged to wear past shirts or may purchase cotton shirts created for 2020 (purple on the left) and 2021 (coral on the right) as shown below.

Both t-shirts are made of 60% recycled cotton, 40% recycled polyester.

Children's sizes are $10 and available by ages 4-6, 6-8, and 8-10.

Adult sizes are $15 and available in XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL.
