How to come …

Usually, visitors to Olomouc who come from far away by plane arrive at Prague. Vienna is also a relatively frequent option. In theory, there are several smaller airports that are closer:

The closest international airports are listed here:

Brno – Airport Tuřany (70 km)

Ostrava – Leoš Janáček Airport in Mošnov (80 km)

Katowice – Katowice-Pyrzowice (210 km)

Bratislava – M. R. Štefánik Airport (210 km)

However, most international visitors to Olomouc come via the airports in Prague (280 km away) and Vienna (260 km) as these two are much better connected and the commute is easy.

How do you get from the airport to Olomouc?

Via Prague (first choice)

Take the Airport Express (https://czech-transport.com/index.php?id=357). The airport of Prague is small. You walk out from the arrival hall (on the right side) and find the “Airport Express” bus station almost in front of you (or a bit to the right).

Buy the ticket from the driver, it costs 100 Czech crowns, payable only in cash!

The commute takes around half an hour usually. But calculate 35 to 45 minutes to be safe. No stops, the destination is just “Praha hlavni nadrazi” (Prague main station).

There, at the railway station, you have direct trains leaving for Olomouc all the time, in relatively short intervals. There are are different companies with different ticket offices: Czeske drahy (Czech Railways), LEO Express, and RegioJet.

You will realize this when looking at the big board with the departures. The company name is always abbreviated: CD for the Czech railways, RJ for RegioJet, LE or LEO for LEO Express.

If you are in a hurry, you can always just board the train and pay a bit more money inside with a bit of surcharge. If you are not in stress: go to the appropriate (signposted) booth and buy the ticket there.

Or buy it just online, here:

Czech Railways: https://www.cd.cz/en/default.htm

Regio Jet: https://regiojet.com/

LEO: https://www.leoexpress.com/en

The easy commute with a frequent shuttle (Airport Express) between airport and train station and then the convenience that the main distance can be covered by direct train speaks much in favor of Prague airport.

Via Vienna (less recommended)

From the airport you can take a direct Flixbus that takes 3:25 hours (Bus travel through Europe | FlixBus). But there are only three buses a day, you should book your seat in advance.

There are also buses operated by RegioJet (https://regiojet.com/), but you have to change the bus in Brno and wait for an hour. Not recommended.

Going by train is the more comfortable option. The downside is that only three train connections a day are relatively fast (2:39 minutes), most others take longer (3:17 or 3:39). In all cases you have to change trains at least once.

The train, however, does not start at Vienna Airport. You need to take a train to the main station (intervals of only 10 minutes, but some trains take 15, some 30 minutes), change there to the train to Olomouc.

Ultimately, on balance, going via Prague will be most comfortable, unless you have great direct flight to Brno or Ostrava. This is unlikely. But in case, please check the commute on your own.

When you are finally in Olomouc …

From Olomouc Main Station to your hotel, you best go by tram.

The hotels are:

Hotel Flora (Hotel Flora – Vítejte v hotelu Flora Olomouc) in case that you opted for the standard accommodation in twin rooms that is provided free of charge for all participants who contribute a presentation, or if you chose a double room (e.g. because you come with your partner and pay the upgrade).

Hotel Theresian (THERESIAN HOTEL, Olomouc | Hotel.cz) for single rooms (with upgrade payment).

You will get more detailed and personalized information in time, so that any doubt is excluded.

When you leave the railway station you are practically already at the tram station (slightly to your left). Do not cross the tram tracks (that would be for the wrong direction).

You have the choice between two ways:

Shorter way

For Hotel Flora, take tram no. 1 and get out at the fifth stop called “Výstaviště Flora” (after “Vejdovského”, “Envelopa”, “Tržnice” and “Okresní soud”), or take tram no. 7 and get out at “Okresní soud”.

For Hotel Theresian, take 1 or 7 and get out at the fourth stop called “Okresní soud” (after the stops “Vejdovského”, “Envelopa” and “Tržnice”).

A bit longer, but through the city center and thus more spectacular

For the Hotel Flora, take tram no. 3 and get out at “Okresní soud” (7th stop) or take 4 or 6 and get out at “Výstaviště Flora” (8th stop). If you do not mind a slightly longer walk you may also take 2 and get out at “Palackeho” (6th stop).

For the Theresian Hotel, take 3,4 or 6 and get out at “Okresní soud” (7th stop).

In other words: You almost cannot make a mistake, just do not take tram no. 5.

For the fuller picture, here is a map of the tramlines

Quite probably you will not need this, but here is a tool to search for public transport connection within Olomouc:

IDOS • Olomouc Public Transport • Connection search (idnes.cz)

Tram tickets

There are two vending machines, yellow booth. One inside the train station, left of the exit. The other on the tram station platform. You can buy there, for 18 Czech crowns, a ticket. Just press the highest of the buttons on the left row. Then the display will show „18“. You throw in the coins (or throw in 50 or 20, you get the rest back) and the machine prints your ticket. Do not forget to validate it then in the tram.

An alternative for buying the ticket is buying it at a kiosk (selling newspapers and other stuff) that is on the tram station platform.

You have to validate the ticket inside the tram.
