Andy Allen, 7th dan, is the chief instructor of NKJ . He has been practicing Shotokan karate since he joined the Dalhousie karate club with senseis Tony and Danny Tam in 1990. His karate teaching experience includes instructing at Dal Tech (formerly T.U.N.S.) from 1994 to 1997. He also has been teaching an NKJ martial arts course in the public school system since 2005. Sensei Allen has a keen interest in studying the practical application of kata. He has been active in tournaments at the provincial, national and recently the world level. Tournament accomplishments include;

2018 Canadian ISKF National Championships, Quebec City, PQ. Gold in kata senior division; Bronze in team kata adult division.

2017 Canadian ISKF National Championships, Saskatoon, Sk. Gold in kata senior division; Gold in kumite senior division

2016 ISKF World Championships, Cape Town, South Africa. Gold in kata senior division; quarter finalist in senior kumite.

2016 Canadian ISKF National Championships, Richmond, BC. Gold in kata senior division

2015 Canadian ISKF National Championships, Quebec City, PQ. 4th place in individual kata, Bronze in team kata division; 4th in team kumite.

Sensei Allen has had numerous provincial medals in team kata, individual kata and individual kumite.


Sensei Allen is committed to teaching effective self-defense oriented karate. He actively seeks opportunities to improve his knowledge and skills including regularly attending seminars and exploring other martial arts including jiu jutsu and judo.


Jake Crawford, 6th dan, began his karate training in 1994. He attained his 6th dan in 2017 Shotokan karate. He also holds a rank of 1st dan in Wado Kai karate which he received in 1998. Sensei Crawford has been teaching an accredited martial arts course in the public school system since 2006 and has been teaching at NKJ as assistant instructor since its opening in fall of 2016.

Sensei Crawford has been active in the tournament scene for many years at the provincial and national level. He has been a provincial team member since 1998 and has had a number of medal finishes;
