Governance Questions

Why is the new board to be elected “at large” instead of having a minimum number from each of the two old districts?

State law changed several years ago to allow only two methods of electing board members. The first method is at large. The second method is to divide the entire district into seven zones of equal population. In the case of a combined district, each of these zones would have approximately 1000 people, and would need to be redrawn every 10 years based on updated census data. The committee of 10 believes it will be hard to find interested and qualified candidates from each of the seven zones. In short, due to the restrictions in state law, the committee of 10 is recommending the “at large” method because the committee of 10 believes restricting board members based on where they live will limit the number of high quality board members.

Who will be the superintendent?

The committee of 10 is recommending that Jay Streicher and Jodi Moore be co-superintendents for the 2023-2024 school year. Dr. Moore plans to retire at the end of the 2024 school year, at which time Mr. Streicher will be the superintendent for the district. Having co-superintendents for the first year of the new district will be a huge asset in helping to merge the curriculum, finances, athletics, activities, and cultures of the two districts. The timing of Dr. Moore's retirement is an advantage to the consolidation effort because it ensures strong leadership during the transition, and eliminates the potentially emotional decision to release an existing superintendent from employment.
