Longhorsley Community Award 2023

In March 2023, parishioners were asked to nominate a person or organisation who they believed had enhanced the parish.

The number of nominations received determined who the deserving recipient would be. This year the winner is…. The Volunteers of Longhorsley Junior Football Club. Our congratulations go to you all.

Parishioners who nominated the volunteers said the following kind words:

“LJFC has been part of the village for more than 20 years. The volunteers naturally change as children grow and move on but without the people that fill these roles village children and surrounding areas would not have this facility which is so important for exercise, mental health and comradeship which is so important in child development.”

“The football club could not exist without the dedication of all the volunteers who run and support it. The current organisers of the different teams are Steven Dick, Ben McMorrow and Andrew Archibald but there are many more who are “behind the scenes” – helpers and volunteers and this award would show appreciation of all they do for the village.”

“Without volunteers to run the club there would be very little else for our young people in the village to participate in. The tireless work involved in securing a new club house and kit etc for the football club also demonstrates the dedication and commitment of the volunteers involved.”

“As a grandparent of teenagers, I know how brilliant these people are. Turning out in all weathers to coach our young people and encouraging them. I am aware of one such person who played in the village as a child and went on to play for Ipswich Town. These coaches are keeping our young people occupied, giving them a focus and teaching them to respect each other.”

Your County Councillor

It was a real pleasure to see so many people enjoying the King’s Coronation events in the village - everything was so well thought through, and absolutely a great village weekend. Well done to everyone involved.

This is the beginning of a new County Council year and I am beginning my third year as leader of the Council. There is a lot of time involved but I am really enjoying things now that the very difficult times I inherited are past us. We have a brilliant staff and will continue the progress we have made together as a team.

We have just launched Fixmystreet which allows better reporting of potholes, litter and so on - please let  me know what you think of it and, as usual, please let me know if I can help with anything.

June Tweets along Archie’s Pond

Remember that the more birdsong you can hear along the walk, the more competitive the “housing” situation is. Two individual males of the same species can be heard singing at each other from adjacent bushes and can be seen more easily as a result. A confrontation sometimes results.

Blackcaps will do this until the end of June, when boundaries and pairs are well established and they quieten down. Willow Warblers will sing at each other through to August, and with 5 - 7 territories along the walk, you can hear them near and far simultaneously. Their song is a descending scale with a flourish at the end and carries quite a distance. The scrubby area before the upper pond is probably the best place to see and hear these two species. These are the commonest migrant songbirds around, look on the British Trust for Ornithology or RSPB websites to hear recordings of their songs and calls.

Other songbirds can be heard anywhere along the walk. Chiffchaffs and Garden Warblers like to have some tall trees in their patch, and the resident Robins, Wrens, Dunnocks and Blackbirds will also sing throughout the summer. In a good breeding season, they will have multiple breeding attempts and so need to keep up the territorial behaviour throughout.

New Housing Development at Burgham

In 2020 there was a planning application (20/02094/FUL) to build 48 houses at Burgham Park. This was refused in 2022 because it constitutes inappropriate development in the Green Belt. The developer appealed to the Secretary of State, and the appeal was granted in March this year.

The appeal decision admitted that this is an inappropriate development, and that it has no practical walking, cycling and public transport links to any amenities. The reason for granting the appeal is mainly based on the existence of planning consent for 50 holiday homes on the site.

The developers are now proceeding with further detailed planning applications to get the development underway. The Construction Environmental Management Plan suggests that construction and other site traffic should use the A1. We hope that we won’t see this traffic coming through Longhorsley and along the East Road. This might start to happen especially when the A1 gets busy.

You can check the status of this and other planning applications on the County Council’s planning portal publicaccess.northumberland.gov.uk
