Longhorsley WI

Happy New Year to all our members! It was good to see 11 of them who were able to get to Dr. Lowry’s talk on ‘Funny Bones & Wisdom Teeth’. He had had a colourful career, initially script-writing for comics such as Dave Allen & the Two Ronnies, before changing tack to qualify in dentistry and medicine and eventually becoming a senior lecturer at Newcastle, an NHS consultant and Director of public health training in the northern region.

At our next meeting on Thursday, 3rd February, in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm we welcome back Isobel Shaw (whose garden we visited at Rothley). She will be giving us the history and an illustrated tour of Marrakesh and the Jardin Majorelle. These 2 acre gardens were started in the 1920s and created over 40 years by French oriental artist, Jacques Majorelle, and contain over 300 plants from 5 continents. The gardens were bought by Yves St Laurent in 1980 to ensure they were preserved.

February also brings back the ‘Show the Love’ event on climate change which last year had Green Hearts adorning the Village Hall. We are planning to hold a craft get-together on Tuesday, 8th February, between 2.30-4.30 for anybody (including non-members) who would like to come along to make their own green heart (any materials) or get further ideas to make a bigger display this year. Please contact Sally Woolley for more information.

We look forward to seeing anyone who would like to join us at either of these get-togethers.

Longhorsley Playgroup

We would like to thank Margaret and Glyn for donating the very beautiful Christmas tree that we had in the Village Hall.

We didn't want to just throw it away, so we’ve taken it round to the allotment and have started to decorate it with bird cakes, ready for the children to take part in the big garden bird watch.

Remember you can follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Junior Football Club

Longhorsley Juniors teams are mostly through the current football season. All the teams are enjoying playing and we have a few age groups who are in with a chance of winning the league. We will update with dates for the final home matches if anyone would like to watch.

We will be starting up an u8s team for next season and are looking for more children who are 7 or 8 before the 31st of August, as well as coaches for this age group. We also have places for the u12 and u11 teams for next season. Anyone interested please get in touch.

The replacement of the clubhouse is well underway. We are hoping to have the timber clad containers on site in March, with a grand opening and end of season awards not long after.
