Thought for the Month

First of all, may I say thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest in the repair of St Helen’s Church. These days, l hardly ever step outside the vicarage without someone enquiring about how we are getting on. Your interest is very encouraging. As you will be aware the church building is both consecrated and listed. This means that we must follow The Church of England’s procedures to obtain authorisation to proceed to the repair. This has progressed to the publication of the statutory notice of the proposed works. This notice has been attached to the security fencing outside the church and has to be displayed for 28 days, until 24th October. After this, we are confident that we shall focus on the actual repair work. Though as you might know from your own buildings, availability of workers and materials can be in short supply. Watch out for progress - and notices in the Tree – and thank you again for the interest you have expressed in your parish church.

Harvest Thanksgiving

Now let’s say thank you for harvest. The allotments, which frequently l walk by, are a joy to behold, so many different vegetables and flowers, different colours and textures and tastes. Now that our freezers are full, and dry storage space packed to capacity, it is time to pause in wonder at this bounty. It follows spring sowing and growing and summer sun and fun and picking the first produce. We look forward now to winter days when we shall enjoy the fruits of our labours in home-made soups and stews and casseroles and crumbles...

All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above;

then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, For all his love.

Finally, during the continuing concern over cases of Covid 19 in our community, thank you to everyone who has helped and is helping in any way. This is a challenging time and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. Jesus taught us the great commandment, Love your neighbour as you love yourself (Matthew 23:39). Residents, relatives, friends have been so generous with their time and talents in looking out for others. Jesus taught us also that the smallest gift, even a cup of water, is worthy. ‘I was hungry and you fed me...l was naked and you clothed me...whenever you did this for one of the least important of these members of my family, you did it for me’ (Matthew 25:35-45).

Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses... the time for planting and the time for pulling up...the time for tearing down and the time for building...the time for finding and the time for losing. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (Good News Bible).
