LONGHORSLEY IN WW2
Published in 2021, by Longhorsley Local History Society, a book written by local resident, Bill Ricalton
on the amazing amount of WW2 activities in and around the village
LONGHORSLEY IN WW2
including the
Secret Underground Army of Longhorsley and Netherwitton
The book details, from the author's personal recollections and of his contempories plus subsequent research, of village life around the time of WW2. The Longhorsley area was used by the army as a training base for various regiments. Eshott airfield nearby was used by the RAF for training spitfire pilots. As such the locals were in the minority and had some limitations of access and activities. However, some locals volunteered in a 'secret' army, one of many resistance groups in Northumberland set up to combat a potential enemy invasion on the Northumberland coast.
It gives a fascinating incite to what life was like 'at home' during the War compared to what is now a typical attractive Northumberland village.
