IMAGES FROM TRADITIONAL TO TRANSITIONAL

-

This meeting is in conjunction with the East West Center Arts Program’s exhibition

“ China Through the Lens of John Thomson 1869-1872 ”

in Burns Hall Art Gallery

This exhibition features rare glimpses into old China taken throughout the imperial empire by An early Scottish photographer. His exciting journey began in Hong Kong then up the Pearl River, following the Min River to the Yangtze River and from Fuzhou then to Shanghai and on to Beijing. He struggled with his cumbersome burden of photographic equipment, glass plates and chemicals to capture the landscape, architecture, people, their customs and daily life with great beauty and sensitivity.

The exhibit will include sixty of the finest images of Thomson’s travels through China, never before displayed in Hawaii. His original glass plates and photographs reside in the Wellcome Museum in London. Supplementing the exhibition in the adjacent gallery will be a display of selected images of the early Chinese in Hawaii provided by the Hawaii Chinese History Center and other local families. Featured also will be a few rare photographs connected with Dr. Sun Yat-Sen in Hawaii
