FAO Newsletter Issue 5 - Dec 2011: Fisheries management project is in line with Rio+20 framework:FAO Officer

Mr Rolf Willmann, Senior Fishery Planning Officer, FAO Rome, said the the Fisheries Management for Sustainable Livelihoods(FIMSUL) project focused on the principles of environment, society and economy of the sustainable development agenda which was the same as the institutional framework focus of the forthcoming Rio+20 Conference to be held in Brazil in June. He was speaking at the final Results Sharing Workshop on 12 December, 2011 at Chennai to mark the end of the project on 31 December 2011.

Interview with Gavin Wall

Earlier this week, the Empowered Group of Ministers approved the draft of the Food Security Bill, which will entitle 75 per cent of rural households and 50 per cent of urban households to subsidised foodgrain. Considered the most important legislation after the United Progressive Alliance’s job guarantee scheme, it has generated controversy for committing the government to an expensive entitlement scheme and for relying on the existing inefficient Public Distribution System. Gavin Wall, the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Representative in India, suggests that it may not address food security as universally understood.
