Help to Pay Hospital Bills
Charity care refers to free or low cost care provided by hospitals to uninsured or underinsured patients. New York State has provided significant state funding to hospitals for charity care since 1983, but it wasn't until 2007 that hospitals were actually required to provide charity care to uninsured patients under the Hospital Financial Assistance Law (HFAL).
Each hospital's financial assistance program is different, so you should be sure to obtain a copy of the policy from your hospital. You can get more information from the hospital's discharge planner or the Billing Department.

Community Health Advocates (CHA) is a statewide non-profit organization that helps New Yorkers navigate the complex health care system by providing individual assistance. CHA helps consumers find and navigate health coverage or access low-cost or free care. It also helps consumers solve billing issues, understand health care reform and their health care rights. For more information about CHA call the helpline at 1-888-614-5400 or visit www.communityhealthadvocates.org.
