Editorial - Audio Visual October 2019

TO ALL OUR AV ENTHUSIASTS

And so this is my swansong!

A big thank you to all AV enthusiasts who supported me on so many fronts over the past six years. The going was tough at times, but then the tough got going!

A special word of thanks to those people who so willingly gave it their all to run one or more AV Salons over the years. It meant long hours and days of hard work, but most organisers vowed that they would be willing to do it again!

One regret is the low entry levels on our National AV Salons, but I hope that this will improve in future. I also hope to see a few more clubs running an International AV Salon that will put South Africa on the map as a force to be reckoned with! The first Port Elizabeth International AV Salon attracted a whopping 184 entries – I do believe that we set a world record!

Audio Visual changed drastically over time. We experienced the golden years of AV, from the slide era to the digital era. I enjoyed creating new sequences, meeting AV workers, local and from abroad, attending congresses, festivals, workshops and shows. Many valuable friendships were forged. I deeply appreciate the wonderful camaraderie that we built up through the years.

A famous musician was asked at what point he started being successful. His reply was, “When I began writing songs for myself and not for what I perceived to be my audience and their needs.” I believe that the same attitude may be applied to our Audio Visuals. If others appreciate them, that’s the icing on the cake!

Visit by John and Judith Hodgson from Australia

John and Judith Hodgson visited Port Elizabeth in September 2019. Their showcase on Australia went down extremely well with the audience. During the second half John and Judith presented us with several of their national and international award-winning audio visuals. There was no guessing as to why these AVs were so successful – all were interesting, entertaining and beautiful and most had an unexpected twist at the end. After their trip to Scotia Safaris and a Raggy Charter, John and Judith made their way to Ladybrand, to join up with members of AV Makers SA for the AV Convention. There they showed their sequences of Australian landscapes and shared their knowledge and ideas, particularly about story-telling in AV, with the attendees. Almost all attendees had brought at least one AV of their own which was shown and discussed. AV Makers report that they were all inspired and energised for making AVs.

Thank you to John and Judith, we hope to see you in the not too distant future!

International AV Festival

Saturday, 18 April 2020, 7:00pm to ~ 9:00

The Latow International Audio Visual Festival is the annual highlight of the year in the AV community. Images are presented through this dynamic medium on a theatre-size screen with audio soundtracks presented in surround sound. This is a premier showcase to see exciting photography through the use of audio-visual techniques to tell a story or to show off an artistic vision. A great evening for photographers, other visual artists, and those who simply appreciate a good entertaining show.

According to Paul Sparrow, Latow International AV Festival Director, “This is not a competition but a premiere exhibition showcase to expose and promote the productions and their creators as well as the audiovisual medium to a wider public audience. There is no charge to submit a show to the Festival. The festival takes place on Saturday April 18th, 2020 - 7:00 pm in the main gallery of the Art Gallery of Burlington as part of Latow's major annual Photography Weekend (this year with Kas Stone) and will typically have an audience who come from all over Southern Ontario and New York State to view the shows presented. Shown on a theatre size screen with surround sound the concept is to give a new appreciation of still photography by using the AV medium in unique and imaginative ways that integrates them with dynamic soundtracks. Last year the Festival included submissions from Canada and internationally from the UK, Ireland, Australia, Norway and South Africa.”

4th PECC International AV Salon

The first entries for our PECC International AV Salon are in! If you have not yet had a look at the Salon Brochure published on the PSSA Website http://www.pssa.co.za/2020-pecc-intl yet, the closing date is 6 February 2020. The “two little swallows”, as they are fondly known, Joan Ryder-Rathband FRPS, FPSSA, AFIAP, DPAGB, and Clive Rathband FRPS, FPSSA, EFIAP, DPAGB are our International judges from the UK. They are experts in the field of AV and have had several successes on National and International AV Salons.

Joan, born in South Africa, now married to Clive and living in Wiltshire, UK, loves wildlife, nature, and sport and landscape photography and is always in search of the ultimate 'mood' lighting. Favourite South African photographic spots include the National Parks of Southern Africa, Cape Town and the West Coast of SA. She also adores the beautiful English Landscape as well as the flora and fauna of both countries.

Clive has been a keen and active photographer since 1972 with a great love of the natural world. Clive is inspired by the landscape of the UK, especially in his native Wiltshire, but is also equally at home in the dry desert landscapes of Southern Africa. He also enjoys photographing the flora and fauna in the National Parks of South Africa as well as other subjects such as sport.

We are certainly looking forward to having them back on South African soil for a while!

I wish everybody many happy hours with your AV making!

Editorial - Audio Visual September 2019

TO ALL OUR AV ENTHUSIASTS

Thank you to all our enthusiastic AV workers who entered the recent PSSA AV Salon. Congratulations to the following people on their acceptances and awards:

2019 PSSA NATIONAL AUDIO VISUAL SALON

Wouldn’t it be great if these Audio Visuals can be showcased at the Sabie Congress later this year!

There was a good entry from across the country with a variety of subject matter and quality.

We received 31 entries from 17 authors belonging to 10 clubs. The provincial representation was:

The minimum point for an acceptance was 10 out of a maximum of 15.

The PSSA guideline is to have an acceptance percentage of not less than 25% and not more than 35% of the nett entry for Print and AV salons, provided the quality is there. (For PDI salons the range is 20-25%). The judges found that the quality of the entries was such that the maximum number would be accepted; thus 11 entries were accepted being 35% of the entries received.

Each judge gave an overall score out of 5 after considering the following 4 aspects which each has an equal weighting: Communication; Visual; Audio and Technique.

Each entry was discussed before the next one was presented. All scores were then collated and presented to the judges for further discussion till consensus was reached on the acceptance level and awards.

Winner of PSSA Silver Medal: Eric Thorburn – “Hill of Destiny”

Certificates of Merit:

Corine Ross - “#Total Shutdown”

Ria Katzke – “I am”

Elizma Fourie - “A smile to remember”

Judging was done live in George and the judges were:

Adri van Oudheusden AV-FPSSA, EPSSA, APSSA (Vers), AV-AFIAP

Luana Laubscher AV-APSSA

Paul Rixom AV-LPSSA

Thank you to Chris Daly for making his facilities available and to Cape Photographers for the use of their equipment.

The general comment from the judges which applied to many entries was that the author would have had better results had he/she kept it shorter and to the original theme. Quite a number were found to be ‘padded’ thereby losing the initial impact.

Roel van Oudheusden

Salon Director

The Sirene Wave AV Salon https://www.sirenefotografia.it/ results are due to be out by 17 November 2019.

Initiatives range from exhibitions to audiovisuals, from meetings with the author to reading portfolios, as well as cinema shorts.

The organisers received a total of 98 Audio Visuals from 58 authors, of which three entries are by two South African authors. We wish them all of the best.

Some well-known guest speakers on the program are Lorenzo de Francesco, Giacomo Cicciotti, Francesca Gernetti, Sandra Zagolin and Diana Belsagrio.

Editorial - Audio Visual August 2019

TO ALL OUR AV ENTHUSIASTS

Last week Thursday was a sad day when we received the news that Nico Jacobs passed away, one of the great souls in audio visual. Our sincere condolences go to Cato and the children and family.

The following message came from Jannie Hougaard, I took the liberty to translate this very special message, it says it all:

"One of the big cameras of our art form's shutter finally closed. Nico Jacobs passed away this morning. With that comes a wonderful contribution he made in the field of photography, to an end. We will miss his talent in seeing and capturing God's creation through the camera and then displaying it with excellent technical skills. He used his photographic abilities to serve his Heavenly Father by capturing the miracle of His handiwork in images. With his excellent audio visual presentations of image, sound and commentary, he has won several nationwide awards and has also touched our hearts here at Kleinmond. We are grateful and will miss him terribly.

Our condolences go to Cato and her children and also their wider family.

Kind regards

Jannie Hougaard"

TO ALL OUR AV ENTHUSIASTS

The Cape Photographers Congress at Montagu proved, once again, to be one of the best! On the AV side, Luana Laubscher spoke about the influence and importance of music in AV, which was very inspirational. Jeff Morris spoke about the use of voice-overs in AV, covering the theory of writing scripts and the required hardware essentials – a thought provoking talk.

A special word of thanks to Johan Kloppers who stepped in to fill my slot, and in his own inimitable style, presented in camera double exposure. All the other presenters offered outstanding lectures and workshops which will be a difficult act to follow. The outings were great fun and the catering was really something out of this world! Thanks to the organising team who made it all possible. Some PDF presentations are available on https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dRXhScNmm9-PSKF9Ru2qunSqZAxwZnnL and if you want to learn more about the next Cape Photographers Congress, then please follow this link, https://drive.google.com/open?id=1lnrIJ9eHLG3Bd0-rTr-8Tbn8Gol-FIkj.

The final 40 AVs in the 3-2-1 Competition were judged live at the Cape Photographers Congress in Montagu. Comments from PSSA members who attended were very positive, and they also remarked that they appreciate all the hard work that goes into an AV Salon. The final results will be out by 30 June 2019.

The recent Tropheé de Paris saw an overwhelming selection of 27 AVs by the French (which is to be expected), 9 from Italy, 3 from Great Britain, 2 from the Netherlands, and 1 each from Australia, Belgium, Poland and Spain. The final results will be out by 1 June 2019. Unfortunately there were no entries from South Africa. Entry fees are becoming exorbitant for South Africans, I do hope that a solution will be found shortly.

Please check out the latest Salon Calendar for closing dates, fees and website addresses on National and International AV Salons. Some of these AV Salons are free of charge!

The Cape Town Photographic Society (CTPS) AV Salon is closing on 31 May this year. You can download the brochure here or email salon director Robert Maginley should you need any information. Please give them your support.

Also do not forget to support the AV Makers SA Up-and-Coming competition (free to members of AV Makers SA), open to authors who have never had acceptances from overseas salons and no medals from South African salons.

Enjoy your AV making!

Editorial - Audio Visual February 2019

TO ALL OUR AV ENTHUSIASTS

It is difficult to believe that we are already at the end of January 2019! May this year be a very productive and satisfying year! The year started off with a bang, with the Canadian Association for Photographic Art’s

LATOW AV FESTIVAL

Paul Sparrow, the Latow International AV Fest Director, writes as follows:“The lineup of shows for this year’s Latow International Audio-Visual Festival is now finalized.

This year we had submissions from Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, Norway and South Africa that will make up the shows that will be presented at this year’s gala evening presentation on April 13th at the Art Gallery of Burlington (see the poster for the lineup).

If you need AV Festival tickets for family and friends they are $10.00 in advance and can be purchased online through http://latowseminar.com/product/av-festival-saturday-evening/ or they can be purchased that evening “at-the-door” for $15.00 (depending on availability).

One last thing… I hope you’ll spread the word through social media… to your friends, camera club acquaintances and your larger photography community about this unique AV showcase presentation on the BIG size screen here at the Art Gallery of Burlington.

The Latow International Audio Visual Festival is the annual highlight of the year in the AV community. Images are presented through this dynamic medium on a theatre-size screen with audio soundtracks presented in surround sound. It’s a premier showcase to see an exciting display of photography on different topics, using different audio-visual techniques to tell a story or to show off an artistic vision. A great evening for photographers, other visual artists, and those who simply appreciate a good entertaining show.”

Well done to Eric Thorburn who had his AV, Hill of Destiny, accepted for the Fest, which also puts Eric in the running for the $500 (Canadian) “Award for Artistic Merit” that will be awarded to one of the selected audio visuals at the end of the evening. The award is designed to recognize the “art” of the AV medium and is sponsored by the Art Gallery of Burlington and the Latow Photographers Guild and will be decided by a panel of artists from the other artistic disciplines at the Art Gallery outside of Latow. Eric is in the eminent company of Richard Brown, Bill Bruce and Malcolm Imhoff and Mark Allen. Well done to all successful entrants!

The excitement is mounting for the Cape Photographers’ Congress in Montagu from 28 April to 2 May – with the added bonus of the legendary Protea Farm tractor trip and potjiekoslunch on 3 May as an optional extra. Some members of the organising committee last week undertook a scouting trip to Montagu and were almost bowled over by all the photographic opportunities offered by the town and surrounds. And this was without seeing the vineyards and orchards in their autumn colours, which will offer delegates even more scenic opportunities.

Editorial - Audio Visual Aug/Sep 2018

TO ALL OUR AV ENTHUSIASTS

It was great to meet up with Howard Bagshaw and Carole Bagshaw (from the UK) in a very cold and wet Knysna. We downed bottomless cups of coffee and had a really good time. A big thank you to Marianne and Dirk van der Zeyden for hosting us all! Many AV workers will remember Howard’s excellent Audio Visuals and lectures at various Congresses and Clubs here in South Africa. Howard and Carole will conclude their sightseeing trip shortly, and will attend the AV Makers SA Convention in Ladybrand as guests, on their way home to the UK. We hope to see them again in the not too distant future!

Thank you to Antenie Carstens FPSSA, AV-FPSSA, who recently agreed to assist me in future with the running of the AV Division. Antenie has always been of assistance in many ways on the AV front, but now it is official. Antenie has a special interest in Club photography which includes abstract, landscape, portraits and conceptual photography and is deeply involved with the PSSA JAP training programme. Another field of interest is digital preservation, issues with file formats, scanning procedures, standards, workflow and policies for professional collection institutions in South Africa. Antenie has been instrumental in the smooth running of many a Congress, especially on the technical side. He has also acted as a judge for various National and International Salons. With Antenie’s help the workload will be so much lighter. Antenie firmly believes that teamwork within the society is the only way to success.

The Port Elizabeth Camera Club is currently preparing for the PSSA Congress which runs from 30 September to 5 October 2018. On the AV side the good news is that there will be an AV appreciation and discussion show, as well as an Honours Advisory Workshop. Please consult the Congress programme by clicking on this link, for updated information.

Please diarise 28 April to May 1, 2019 for what promises to be a fun-filled Congress in Muskadel town, Montagu! The Cape Photographers Congress is not only for photographers from the Western Cape, Garden Route and Eastern Cape regions, but also for photographers from other regions.

PSSA NATIONAL SALON RESULTS

It was a privilege to judge this Salon and special thanks go to Roel for his willingness to wear two hats, one as Salon Director and the other as projectionist. The AVs ran smoothly after Roel found a work-around method where a little gremlin was found.

Our special thanks go to Jenny Daly and Mackie Rixom for hosting us in a splendid and hospitable way! Thanks to my co-judges, Chris Daly and Paul Rixom, for doing an outstanding job.

Thank you to all entrants who responded to my calls for entries (33 in all from 19 authors). There was a good variety in subject matter, which made for strong competition. To level the playing field, a PSSA silver medal was awarded to the best individual production as well as the best co-production. Should you want feedback on your AV, please let me know as soon as possible.

Please click on the following link page 5, and this link page 14, to learn more about FIAP Distinctions – a short series of articles aimed at helping those planning to apply for FIAP Distinctions. They are intended to support and expand on certain issues, starting with “Titles”, something that keeps tripping up applicants. Although titling needs to be addressed as soon as you begin entering international salons, it is increasingly important to all exhibitors, especially under the new FIAP Sanctions Policy.

A LESSON LEARNED . . .

An interesting article appeared in the PAGB’s E-News, here. Issue 2011 dd 7 July 2018, p.4 and I thought it relevant to bring it to the attention of our AV workers. Never assume “Fair Use” of any images obtained from Social Media or the Internet for your AVs, even if you are going to acknowledge the photographer and source.

I would like to encourage club chairpersons to contact me if they have any enquiries with regards to Audio Visual. Further information on AV related items may be found on the PSSA Website here.

WHAT’S ON WHERE

If you happen to be in Birmingham from 16 – 19 March 2019, then check out the Video Show which runs alongside the Photography Show at the NEC. It will encompass every aspect of video content creation, showcasing a multitude of brands and a dedicated programme of seminars, live demos and Masterclasses.

Jonny Sullens, head of events at Future said, “Over the last few years there has been a convergence of stills and video camera equipment. We’ve seen an increase in visitors interested in both photography and videography – The Video Show is a natural next step for the development of our proposition to the image-making world and we’re really excited to get this launch underway for 2019.” The target audience includes professional video makers, creative directors, as well as amateur filmmakers and photographers looking to diversify their skills. Visitors will be able to test and buy the latest video and content creation technology, software and accessories, and learn about all aspects of videography, whatever their skill. Video-themed features will include a live demo stage, in-depth masterclasses, a 230 sqm Drone Zone, a studio showcase demonstrating ideal set-ups whatever the space and the “In Motion” Theatre. For more information, click here.

Please let me know if your club is planning any special AV evenings, in order that I may publish it on the PSSA Website. Any interesting articles are also most welcome!

Editorial - Audio Visual June/July 2018

TO ALL OUR AV ENTHUSIASTS

We have just returned from George, where live judging of The Garden Route National AV Salon took place. Herewith a word from Paul Rixom, the Salon Director:

Garden Route National AV Salon

“I undertook the task of Salon Director ably assisted by Roel van Oudheusden, PSSA Director of Salons. The three judges were Adri van Oudheusden AV EPSSA FPSSA APSSA (Vers) AV-AFIAP, PSSA AV Director, with Mary Hunter AV-APSSA and Luana Laubscher AV-APSSA both of the Knysna Photographic Society.

The closing date of the Salon was 1st June 2018 and the salon was judged on the 9th June at the ‘Langgebou’ which is the regular meeting place of the George Camera Club. Thanks must be extended to the George Camera Club for arranging a booking with the Church for the use of the hall and also to Amelia Koen for providing excellent catering for everybody involved.

Unfortunately a rather disappointing total of only 15 AVs from 9 authors were received for the Salon, however the standard was high and the awarding of acceptances, COMs and medals gave rise to much discussion among the judges. Ultimately 6 AVs were accepted with the PSSA Silver Medal being awarded to Hannelore Seifart for ‘A Prayer for Ciska’ and the PSSA Bronze Medal going to Denise Preiss for ‘The Dry West’.

I would like to extend my congratulations and thanks to all entrants and organisers involved in this Salon.

Paul Rixom AV-LPSSA

AV Makers SA Club Ladybrand AV Convention 31 August 2018 – 2 September 2018

This popular get-together will be taking place again, so do not miss out on this wonderful event - therefore please diarise. I believe that we will have not one, but TWO International guests coming to join us for another memorable get-together. Alastair Taylor, who is Editor of the RPS magazine, will be leading the discussions, while Howard Bagshaw, who is one of the most successful AV producers of our time, will be spending the weekend with us as an unexpected bonus. What an opportunity, not to be missed! Please click here for more information.

Just a thought . . .

The Editor of AV Makers SA Club recently suggested that salon organisers follow suit in giving feedback to authors. Some may think that it does not entail a lot of extra effort, especially when volumes are small. After the recent Garden Route AV Salon, the judges, of their own accord, decided to do a short write-up on each Audio Visual. Within one week after the judging, each judge commented on all 15 Audio Visuals, with the AVs still fresh in our minds. Our write-ups were done in between a host of other PSSA and club duties, and work. (Don’t believe that pensioners have all the time in the world, it isn’t true)! In the end, three authors requested feedback.

When one considers the sheer volume of AV entries on an International AV Salon (the PECC International AV Salon attracted 152 AVs, of which 53 were successful), one can understand that time simply does not allow for the judges’ feedback. There are deadlines to be met, catalogues to be compiled, published and sent out, emails to be sent out with each entrant’s individual results. Certificates have to be prepared, medals have to be engraved, the show has to be organised, the hall and show prepared. Medals not handed out have to be sent out to the entrants, after double-checking all their details and addresses. From preparation to finalisation, such a salon could take up to three months before it is done and dusted. For a National AV Salon, attracting say 40 entries, the procedure is basically the same and here, again, time does not allow for feedback.

So where can we, AV workers, learn more about our hobby? Don’t be afraid to approach other AV workers or judges for their opinion. You will find that most of them are quite willing and able to help. Furthermore, we can learn from workshops, lectures at Congresses, YouTube, Vimeo and a host of other sources. Some software producers have excellent guides and videos that can be downloaded. You will find a list of resources under the AV tab on the PSSA Website. Furthermore we can learn from watching others’ work.

In all these years I have never received feedback from any International or National Salon. Some clubs, however, did give feedback. Did I learn from it? In some instances, yes. BUT most of all I get inspiration from others – not necessarily from AV workers or photographers, but other artists too. Also from films, books, music, plays, travel, just about anything.

So I trust that you will appreciate that feedback is not always possible.

It is great to note that there is an upswing in interest in Audio Visual, specifically in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KZN. If you have any questions regarding Audio Visual, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Enjoy your AV making!
